According to reports, several government buildings around Hoan Kiem Lake have been fenced off and demolished after relocation. The demolition of old structures is a crucial step in preparing the site for subsequent construction phases.
The demolition scope includes 17 agencies, organizations, and 43 households, as per the approved design implementation decision following the basic design. The demolition process adheres to technical procedures: dismantling from top to bottom, removing loose components, collecting waste, and erecting safety barriers.
Ongoing demolition work
Four structures currently under demolition are: State Treasury Transaction Office (197.1 m²), Hanoi Golden Heart Charity Association (50.1 m²), Department of Population, Children, and Social Evil Prevention (541 m²), and Hanoi Association for the Blind (189.8 m²).
Upcoming demolitions include: Hanoi People’s Committee Office (145 m²), City Public Reception Office (446.8 m²), and 25 households that have received compensation and are preparing to hand over the land.
According to Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee, the demolition principle is to hand over the land and demolish it immediately, ensuring absolute safety for workers and surrounding areas. Strict technical procedures are followed (demolishing from top to bottom, in structural sequence), adhering to the demolition design, implementing support measures, fire prevention isolation if hazardous materials are present, and handling toxic substances (if any). All measures aim to ensure swift and efficient demolition without compromising safety or affecting neighboring structures.
Many residents relocating early
Despite the sentimental attachment to their central Hanoi location, residents of Dinh Tien Hoang and Ly Thai To streets unanimously support the plan to create an Eastern Square by Hoan Kiem Lake, contributing to urban beautification and public space development.
Mr. Tr.V.Tr. (Ly Thai To Street) shared that his family received compensation and resettlement support under the project policy. He expressed his agreement with the plan to expand the eastern space of Hoan Kiem Lake, enhancing urban aesthetics and creating public areas for Hanoi residents.
“Our family has been here for generations, so leaving is bittersweet. However, the fair compensation ensures our rights, and we fully support the initiative. The project management team regularly meets with us, explaining policies and helping us understand and feel more secure,” said Mr. Tr.
