Official: Honda Enters the Electric Vehicle, Charging, and Battery Swapping Industry

Starting in November, Honda revealed that following the announcement of restrictions on gasoline-powered vehicles within Hanoi's Ring Road 1, sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles in Vietnam dropped by 10-15% in August and September compared to the same period last year. Honda projects a full-year sales decline of approximately 200,000 units.

On December 17th, Honda Vietnam (HVN) announced significant changes to its business registration, marking a major shift towards the electric vehicle (EV) sector. This update encompasses the entire EV supply chain, from manufacturing to operations.

In manufacturing, HVN added two new sectors:
Manufacture of electric motors, generators, transformers, and electrical control and distribution equipment
(Code 2710) and
Manufacture of other electrical equipment
(Code 2790).

Regarding infrastructure and services, HVN expanded into building charging stations and battery swapping facilities through
Construction of electrical infrastructure
(Code 4221) and
Construction of other civil engineering projects
(Code 4299). The operation of charging stations for electric cars, motorcycles, and scooters falls under
Electric power transmission and distribution
(Code 3513).

The sector
Other business support service activities
(Code 8299) was expanded to include
Construction, installation, and operation of EV charging equipment and battery swapping systems
as well as
Provision of services related to EV charging and battery swapping.

Honda Vietnam also maintains its
Solar power generation
activities, now reclassified under
Electricity production from renewable energy sources
(Code 3512).

Additional changes include reclassification of traditional activities such as vehicle maintenance, wholesale and retail of vehicles, and information technology.

Vietnam’s EV market is currently dominated by players like VinFast, Yadea, Dat Bike, and Selex.
