According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the company has recently received approval for the investment policy of the Quang Trach III LNG Thermal Power Plant project.

The Quang Trach III LNG Thermal Power Plant is part of the Quang Trach Power Center, as outlined in the adjusted Power Master Plan VIII, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 768/QĐ-TTg on April 15, 2025. The project has been granted investment approval by the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, with EVN designated as the investor in Decision No. 1678/QĐ-KKT dated December 1, 2025.

Spanning approximately 74 hectares, including 54.77 hectares of land and 19.23 hectares of water surface, the project is located in Phu Trach Commune, Quang Tri Province.

Utilizing combined-cycle gas turbine technology, the plant will have a capacity of 1,500 MW ±15%. The preliminary investment is estimated at VND 41,826 billion, funded by 20% EVN equity and 80% domestic commercial loans from Vietcombank.

By adopting advanced environmental treatment technologies in line with Vietnamese and World Bank standards, EVN demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development. This initiative also highlights Quang Tri Province’s support in fostering a favorable investment environment and strengthening investor confidence.

EVN is currently finalizing the feasibility study report for appraisal, which will serve as the basis for approval and subsequent implementation phases.

Upon completion, the Quang Trach III LNG Thermal Power Plant will provide a critical power supply, particularly during the high-demand period of 2031–2035 in the Northern region. It will also ensure the safe and stable operation of the national power grid, aligning with the goals of the adjusted Power Master Plan VIII.

The project is expected to drive socio-economic development in Quang Tri Province and the North Central region, contributing approximately VND 1,200 billion annually to the local budget. It will create jobs, boost supporting industries, and attract further investment.

This initiative underscores Quang Tri’s ambition to become a new energy hub in Central Vietnam and marks a significant milestone in the development of key projects within the Quang Trach Power Center.

As per the master plan, the Quang Trach Power Center will have a total capacity of approximately 4,500 MW, comprising Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant, Quang Trach II LNG Thermal Power Plant, and Quang Trach III LNG Thermal Power Plant.

Once operational, each plant is projected to supply around 9.1 billion kWh annually to the national grid, playing a vital role in ensuring long-term energy security and stability.

At COP26, Vietnam joined nearly 150 countries in committing to net-zero emissions by 2050 and signed the Global Coal to Clean Power Transition Statement. To achieve this goal, liquefied natural gas (LNG) has been identified as a strategic solution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring energy security during the transition phase.

LNG has long been recognized as a “clean fossil fuel” due to its superior advantages. When liquefied, natural gas volume decreases by 600 times, optimizing transportation and storage costs. LNG is colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, and is considered the cleanest fossil fuel available today.

Compared to coal, LNG reduces CO₂ emissions by 45–50% and is approximately 30% lower than oil. Pollutants such as nitrogen, sulfur, mercury, and PM2.5 fine dust are significantly minimized, improving air quality, reducing environmental impact, and protecting public health.

In terms of safety, LNG is lighter than water, so in case of leakage or spillage, it quickly evaporates, minimizing impact on water environments. This is a distinct advantage over traditional fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel.

According to energy experts, LNG power is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution, applicable in residential, transportation, industrial, construction, and logistics sectors.
