On the afternoon of December 15th, Long Thanh Airport successfully completed a test flight with the Boeing 787, a wide-body aircraft manufactured by Boeing. This aircraft, the largest in Vietnam Airlines’ fleet, is equipped with twin jet engines and advanced technology, accommodating approximately 340 passengers and capable of long-haul international flights.

Mr. Pham Le Long, Deputy Head of Safety and Quality at Vietnam Airlines, shared his insights:

Reflecting on the successful landing at Long Thanh Airport, Mr. Pham Le Long noted that previous calibration flights primarily utilized smaller aircraft like the Beechcraft King Air 300. “This evaluation aims to comprehensively assess the runway, taxiways, apron, and surrounding areas, ensuring safety conditions for handling larger aircraft,” Mr. Long emphasized.

Meanwhile, Mr. Duong Quang Dien, Deputy Director of the Long Thanh International Airport Project Management Board (ACV), stated that the airport is capable of accommodating all current aircraft types. The selection of the largest wide-body aircraft is to thoroughly validate operational conditions, affirming Long Thanh Airport’s capacity to handle large aircraft.

The use of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for the test flight helps assess the coordination and operational capabilities of all involved units. This activity ensures the accuracy and synchronization of equipment systems, meeting International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards—a critical step before Long Thanh Airport welcomes its first flight on December 19th.

The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) highlighted the significance of yesterday’s technical flight, which validated the entire air traffic control system at Long Thanh Airport. The flight directly assessed the coordination between air traffic controllers, pilots, and the synchronization of technical systems under operational conditions with wide-body aircraft.

According to VATM, the results of this initial technical flight are crucial for further refining flight procedures and operational protocols, preparing for the next phase of Long Thanh Airport’s operations as planned.

Following the completion of the technical test flight, Long Thanh Airport is set to welcome its first three official flights on December 19th. The inaugural flight will again feature Vietnam Airlines’ Boeing 787.
