On December 19th, marking the 79th anniversary of the Nationwide Resistance Day (1946-2025) and in anticipation of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, a grand ceremony was held to inaugurate and commence technical operations of 234 key infrastructure projects across the nation.
At 6 a.m. on December 19th, at the Western Extension of Terminal 2, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) inaugurated the expansion project of the International Passenger Terminal T2. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh attended the ceremony.
The expansion project of Noi Bai Airport’s International Terminal T2 began in May 2024 and was completed in just over 18 months, ensuring absolute safety for hundreds of daily flights during construction.
The timely completion of this project holds significant importance, alleviating the overload pressure on the largest aviation hub in the North, just before the peak Tet season and the 2026 tourism season.
The expansion increases the terminal’s total floor area to over 200,000 m², boosting its capacity from 10 million to 15 million passengers annually (with a potential to serve up to 18 million). It adds more boarding gates, increasing from 17 to 30, and jet bridges from 14 to 27, meeting the growing demand for international travel.
Beyond physical expansion, the T2 Terminal extension symbolizes ACV’s bold leap in digital transformation strategy. For the first time in Vietnam, a comprehensive digital ecosystem has been implemented in an international terminal. From self-service kiosks for check-in and bag drop to automated immigration lanes and biometric security checks, a seamless “digital flow” has been created.
This innovative approach revolutionizes operations, shifting from manual to automated processes, optimizing efficiency, and enhancing passenger experience.
In addition to technology, the project showcases a commitment to sustainable architecture (Green Airport). The terminal features an open design, maximizing natural light and incorporating green spaces, offering tranquil oases amidst the airport’s bustling atmosphere. Local cultural elements are seamlessly integrated into the modern design, positioning Noi Bai as a cultural gateway for international visitors.
Following the inauguration, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh boarded Vietnam Airlines’ special flight VN1, departing Noi Bai International Airport at 6:30 a.m. and arriving at Long Thanh International Airport at 8:15 a.m., marking the first flight to land at the new airport.
After nearly five years of construction, Phase 1 of the Long Thanh Airport project has reached completion, achieving the highest 4F standard set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This milestone represents an unprecedented “construction miracle,” opening new development opportunities for the Southern Key Economic Region and advancing Vietnam’s goal of becoming a global aviation hub.
At Long Thanh International Airport, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh attended the inauguration ceremony and the launch of the first flight.
Phase 1 of the Long Thanh International Airport project comprises four components: Component 1 includes government agency headquarters; Component 2, air traffic management facilities by the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM); Component 3, essential airport facilities by ACV, including the passenger terminal, cargo terminal, parking structures, runways, taxiways, navigation systems, aircraft parking aprons, and fuel supply systems; and Component 4, other facilities overseen by the Ministry of Construction.
