The Vice Chairman of the Ha Tinh Provincial People’s Committee, Tran Bau Ha, has signed Document No. 10102/UBND-KT1, approving the termination of the 500,000-ton-per-year iron ore processing plant project in Vu Quang commune, Ha Tinh province. This decision aligns with the proposal submitted by the Department of Finance.

Accordingly, the Ha Tinh Provincial People’s Committee has tasked the Department of Finance, relevant agencies, and local authorities with conducting a comprehensive review. These entities are fully accountable under the law, to the Provincial People’s Committee, and to related bodies for the accuracy of the inspection data, reports, and recommendations. They must ensure strict adherence to legal procedures governing investment, planning, land use, environmental protection, taxation, and other pertinent regulations.

Abandoned project reduced to a pile of waste.

The Vu Quang iron ore processing plant, located in Vu Quang commune, Ha Tinh province, was established in 2008 on a 192,318 m² site with a total investment of 158 billion VND. It commenced operations in May 2009, strategically positioned to supply raw materials to the Van Loi plant in Vung Ang.

Initially designed to produce 500,000 tons of iron ore annually, the plant was also expected to create employment opportunities for thousands of local workers, thereby boosting Ha Tinh’s socio-economic development.

However, these expectations were unmet. In 2010, the Van Loi project collapsed due to insufficient funding, leaving the Vu Quang plant’s output without a market. Operations dwindled until a complete halt in 2012. After over a decade of inactivity, vast areas of land ceded by locals for the project now lie abandoned, resulting in significant waste.
