Recently, the People’s Committee of Can Tho City issued Decision No. 3141/QD-UBND, approving the planning task for the Mekong Resort Urban Area at a scale of 1:2,000.
Spanning approximately 2,945.12 hectares, the Mekong Resort Urban Area is projected to accommodate around 300,000 residents. The project is designed as a modern, multi-functional urban development, seamlessly blending residential spaces, tourism, and service-economic activities. Its goal is to achieve sustainable growth while adapting to climate change.
Location of the Mekong Resort Urban Area Planning.
Strategically located in Chau Thanh, Dong Phuoc, Phu Huu, and Thanh Hoa communes (Can Tho City), the area borders existing residential zones and a network of canals. This positioning fosters the development of an eco-resort urban model integrated with riverside landscapes. The planning process is expected to be completed within 9 months.
As a key functional hub, the Mekong Resort Urban Area will serve as a modern urban growth pole in southern Can Tho City. It aims to expand urban spaces, enhance residents’ quality of life, and shift the economic focus toward services and tourism.
Additionally, the project is envisioned as a large-scale tourism and resort destination, featuring experiential cultural, sports, and entertainment activities such as water parks, multi-purpose sports centers, golf courses, and event venues. It aspires to become a standout tourist attraction for Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region.
Another critical objective is the development of synchronized technical and social infrastructure. This includes housing, commercial services, education, healthcare, cultural facilities, and high-quality public spaces to meet future urban demands and population growth.
The project is also designed as an eco-smart urban area, harmonizing architectural and landscape design with natural conditions. It prioritizes climate resilience, low emissions, and sustainable development.
According to the Can Tho City People’s Committee, the approval of the 1:2,000 zoning plan provides the legal framework for subsequent steps, including detailed 1:500 planning, investment project development, construction management, and area development control aligned with the city’s overall vision.
The planning task emphasizes thorough reviews of environmental, population, natural, and defense-security factors to ensure balanced solutions that reconcile economic-social growth with long-term safety and sustainability.
