The Ministry of Home Affairs has recently proposed a new plan for the 2026 New Year’s Day holiday, seeking feedback from various ministries and sectors. Specifically, the proposal suggests observing January 1, 2026, as a public holiday, while swapping the working day on Friday, January 2, 2026, with the weekend day of Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Under this plan, civil servants and public employees would enjoy a four-day consecutive break for the 2026 New Year’s Day holiday, starting from Thursday, January 1, 2026, through Sunday, January 4, 2026. This includes two swapped working days and two regular weekend days.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, this proposal encourages employers to adopt the same holiday schedule for their employees as that of civil servants and public employees, ensuring full compliance with labor regulations. It also promotes agreements that benefit employees even further.

For the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, government officials, civil servants, public employees, and workers in administrative, public service, political, and socio-political organizations will enjoy a five-day break as per regulations.

The official holiday period begins on Monday, February 16, 2026 (the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Snake), and ends on Friday, February 20, 2026 (the 4th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Horse). Combined with the four regular weekend days, public sector employees will have a total of nine consecutive days off.

For workers in the private sector, employers have the flexibility to choose from three Lunar New Year holiday options: one day at the end of the Year of the Snake and four days at the start of the Year of the Horse, two days at the end of the Year of the Snake and three days at the start of the Year of the Horse, or three days at the end of the Year of the Snake and two days at the start of the Year of the Horse.
