Phu Quoc is accelerating key infrastructure projects to host APEC 2027.

Vietnam has been selected as the host country for the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC 2027), with Phu Quoc as the designated venue. The event is expected to drive infrastructure improvements, attract investment, and boost tourism and real estate development. Currently, infrastructure and service projects are being rapidly implemented.

Recently, Phu Quoc commenced construction on a 17.6 km urban light rail transit (LRT) line along the 10-lane DT 975 road, directly connecting Phu Quoc International Airport to the APEC Convention Center. The train is designed to travel at speeds of 70-100 km/h, with a capacity of approximately 4,500 passengers per hour. The line is scheduled for completion by 2027, making Phu Quoc the first city in Vietnam to have an LRT system.

This model, already implemented in cities like Singapore and Dubai, aims to reduce private vehicle usage and emissions. The project is being developed under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) scheme with a total investment of nearly VND 9 trillion.

Mr. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of An Giang Provincial People’s Committee, stated, “The project will help Phu Quoc further enhance its transportation system, particularly modern infrastructure. Beyond serving APEC, it will benefit Phu Quoc in the long term.”

Tourist arrivals in Phu Quoc have increased tenfold over the past decade, creating a pressing need for modern transportation options. Alongside the LRT, numerous projects for the 2027 APEC High-Level Forum are progressing rapidly, such as the Convention Center and Multipurpose Theater, which have completed 33% of total volume in just six months, and the expanded International Airport, where Terminal T2 has reached the fourth floor in only four months.

With the development of a convenient transportation network, events, tourism, and commerce are helping Phu Quoc establish modern infrastructure and position itself as a new global hub for tourism and events.
