Vietnam’s collector car market has recently witnessed the emergence of a rare Mercedes-Benz 190 SL for sale. The seller quoted a price of VND 13 billion (approximately USD 550,000). This two-door roadster is a rare find, representing an iconic post-war sports car model from Mercedes-Benz, and is almost exclusively found in private collections within Vietnam.

This particular Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, produced between 1955 and 1963, features a convertible design with a removable hardtop. According to the seller, it retains its original 1.9L four-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Both the exterior and interior components are reportedly intact, reflecting the condition expected of a classic car that has endured several decades.
The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is considered a more accessible alternative to the 300 SL, prioritizing a smooth driving experience, style, and luxury over high performance. Over its production lifespan, more than 25,000 units of the 190 SL were manufactured globally. In Vietnam, however, only a handful are known to exist, primarily owned by long-time collectors.

Among Vietnamese classic car enthusiasts, Đặng Lê Nguyên Vũ is renowned for owning the largest collection of Mercedes-Benz 190 SLs, with at least two in his personal collection. A few others are believed to be owned by collectors in Ho Chi Minh City and Ninh Binh, though they rarely appear on the open market.
In today’s automotive market, VND 13 billion could also secure several modern luxury or sports car options. For instance, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (VND 13.2 billion) and the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore (VND 13.3 billion) are both within this price range. The Porsche 911 Turbo offers high-performance sports car capabilities with its iconic design and powerful engine, while the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore emphasizes open-top driving, Italian style, and emotional engagement.

Additionally, this budget could also secure various new luxury sedans or SUVs equipped with advanced technology, full amenities, and official warranties—features that a classic car like the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL cannot offer for daily use.
At VND 13 billion, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is valued not for its technology or performance but for its historical significance, rarity, and collectible appeal. Choosing between a classic like the 190 SL and a modern vehicle depends on the buyer’s priorities: owning a timeless icon or enjoying contemporary technology and convenience.
