On the afternoon of December 30th, during the 8th specialized session, the Can Tho City People’s Council adopted a resolution adjusting the city’s master plan until 2030, with a vision extending to 2050, following its merger with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces.
Session in progress.
Under the new plan, Can Tho is poised to become a national growth hub, driving regional development with its influence and leadership. It will serve as the region’s central hub for trade, tourism, logistics, maritime economy, processing industries, strategic technologies, high-tech agriculture, advanced education, specialized healthcare, entrepreneurship, innovation, and cultural and sports development.
Can Tho aims for an average annual economic growth rate of over 10% from 2026 to 2030, with labor productivity increasing by more than 10% annually. The city targets a 15% annual rise in total budget revenue, aiming to reach approximately VND 57 trillion by 2030.
Unanimous approval from all delegates.
As part of its functional zone development, Can Tho has designated the Tran De Economic Zone, spanning over 40,000 hectares along the coastal area linked to the Tran De International Seaport, across Tran De, Cu Lao Dung, and Vinh Chau districts. This multi-sector economic zone will feature integrated modern infrastructure, environmental protection measures, and robust national defense and security provisions.
Recently, there has been debate over the feasibility of investing in the Tran De Seaport, given its offshore location and high development costs, especially with the construction of the Hon Khoai deep-water port in Ca Mau already underway.

2025 Import-Export: Record Trade Volume, Quality Growth Challenges
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the country’s total import-export turnover in 2025 is projected to reach $920 billion, marking a 16.9% increase compared to the previous year—the highest level ever recorded. The trade balance continues to show a surplus of $21.18 billion, though this figure represents only 84.92% of the surplus achieved in 2024. These numbers vividly highlight both the resilience of Vietnam’s international trade and the increasingly evident limitations of a growth model reliant on expanding import-export volumes.
