Hanoi plans to invest in a two-tiered road tunnel crossing the Red River in the northern area by 2026. This large-scale transportation project aims to alleviate pressure on existing bridges and enhance connectivity in the northern regions of the capital.

The northern Red River road tunnel begins at Park Street in the Ciputra urban area, Phu Thuong Ward, and ends at National Highway 5 in Vinh Thanh Commune.

This tunnel is designed to create a new transportation axis, directly connecting the northwestern and northeastern areas of Hanoi, thereby enhancing the city’s transportation infrastructure network.

The project spans approximately 5.6 km, with the river-crossing tunnel section measuring about 3.5 km. It features two parallel tunnels, each with a diameter of 15.2 meters, accommodating two traffic levels.

The cross-sectional width of the entire route is approximately 40 meters, designed to handle high traffic volumes and support long-term development goals.

With an estimated total investment of 21,930 billion VND, this is one of Hanoi’s largest transportation projects in the coming years.

Strategically located between Thang Long Bridge and Nhat Tan Bridge, the tunnel addresses the significant traffic congestion in this area of the Red River daily.

The addition of this tunnel is expected to significantly reduce the burden on existing bridges and provide an alternative transportation route for northern Hanoi.

On the western side, the tunnel connects to Phu Thuong Ward, facilitating access to the tunnel entrance.

On the eastern side, the route passes through Vinh Thanh Commune, primarily through agricultural land. The area’s favorable conditions will facilitate construction and connection to National Highway 5 as planned.

Upon completion, the two-tiered Red River road tunnel will enhance northern connectivity, reduce bridge traffic, and promote socio-economic development, contributing to Hanoi’s comprehensive urban planning.

Additionally, Hanoi plans a second Red River tunnel in the southern area, starting at the intersection of Linh Nam and Nguyen Khoai streets and ending at the intersection of Ly Thanh Tong and Giap Hai streets in Bat Trang Commune, with an estimated investment of 24,604 billion VND. These tunnels are expected to lay the foundation for modern and sustainable transportation infrastructure development.
