During an inspection, authorities discovered over 120 tons of pork stored in Halong Canfoco’s warehouse, including raw, processed, and freshly slaughtered meat. All samples tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF). Alarmingly, 2 tons of this contaminated meat had already entered production, being processed into canned meat products. The authorities promptly destroyed this batch.
On December 24, 2025, the Hai Phong City Police Department’s Investigation Agency pressed charges against nine individuals: Bui Duc Trong (born 1979, residing at 8/26/90/191 Da Nang, Ngo Quyen District, Hai Phong); Le Ba Doanh (born 1977, 12/48 Ton Duc Thang, An Bien District, Hai Phong); Nguyen Thi Tuyen (born 1980, Tien Xa 2, My Hao, Hung Yen); Nguyen Thi Lan (born 1977, Dong Vi Village, Dong Hung Commune, Hung Yen); Dinh Thi Nghi (born 1982, Quang Trung Village, Than Khe Commune, Hung Yen); Nguyen Binh Loan (born 1968, Tran Phu Village, Than Khe Commune, Hung Yen); Pham Xuan Toan (born 1975, Dong Do Ky Village, Than Khe Commune, Hung Yen); Nguyen Gia Dat (born 1971, Kim Ngoc 3 Village, Bac Tien Hung Commune, Hung Yen); and Trinh Ha Viet (born 1991, Thien Trang Village, Ha Nam Commune, Hai Phong). They were charged under Article 317, Clause 4 of the Penal Code for supplying and trading food products derived from sick or deceased pigs affected by ASF.
According to authorities, Trong and his accomplices had been purchasing contaminated pork for approximately six months, selling it to the company. This diseased meat was declared for intra-provincial consumption to bypass health certification requirements. They legitimized its origin using documentation from registered slaughterhouses, originally intended for other goods.
As reported by VTV, one of the sellers, Nguyen Thi Lan (Dong Hung Commune, Hung Yen Province), admitted to sourcing and butchering these pigs over the past six months, selling them to a buyer in Hai Phong. The illicit pork was disguised as legitimate goods through falsified paperwork.
In a statement to VTV, Senior Lieutenant Nguyen The Linh, Deputy Head of the Police Department for Investigating Economic Crimes, Corruption, and Smuggling in Hai Phong, explained that the perpetrators used legitimate slaughterhouse documents to quickly transport and distribute the meat, evading scrutiny from regulatory bodies.
