Recently, pork prices have begun to rise as the year-end demand increases, catering to various holidays and the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations.

Mr. Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock and Animal Health, provides insights on pork supply and prices for the Lunar New Year 2026.

Meanwhile, the supply has been impacted by disease outbreaks. Data from the Department of Livestock and Animal Health reveals that in 2025, approximately 47,000 livestock perished or were washed away.

Diseases also led to the death and culling of 1.27 million pigs, a 13-fold increase compared to 2024. The peak of the outbreak occurred in July and August, primarily affecting small-scale farmers who lacked proper biosecurity measures.

Currently, pork prices range between 64,000 and 69,000 VND per kilogram, varying by region.

On January 6th, during the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment’s regular press conference, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien assured that while pork prices are rising, there will be no shortage of pork for the Lunar New Year.

Mr. Pham Kim Dang stated that the total pork production in 2025 is estimated at 8.66 million tons, a 4.3% increase (reaching 98.9% of the planned target of 8.75 million tons). From now until and after the Lunar New Year 2026, the demand for livestock products, particularly meat and eggs, is expected to rise by 5-10% compared to the average monthly demand in 2025 (approximately 350,000–450,000 tons of meat and 1.5–1.6 billion poultry eggs per month).

According to the leadership of the Department of Livestock and Animal Health, with diseases under control, farmers can confidently rebuild their herds. The market is expected to stabilize, with pork prices fluctuating around 70,000 VND per kilogram, ensuring a balanced supply and demand without shortages during the holiday season.

“Following market trends, prices typically rise by 5-10% at year-end. Pork prices are projected to remain below 75,000 VND per kilogram, with little chance of reaching 80,000 VND if disease control measures are effectively maintained,” Mr. Dang predicted.
