Currently, the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway sees between 40,000 and 50,000 vehicles daily, a fourfold increase since its inauguration.

Experts predict a 10-15% annual traffic growth, leading to potential congestion and overcapacity by 2028.

During holidays and weekends, traffic can surge to over 100,000 vehicles per day, causing severe congestion and delays.

During peak congestion, traffic police and management units deploy personnel to regulate traffic flow and manage toll booths.

The 103 km Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway features three lanes per direction, two emergency lanes, and an 8-10 lane toll station section.

To prevent overcapacity and congestion, VIDIFI has proposed expanding the expressway from six to ten lanes, pending Ministry of Construction approval.

VIDIFI plans to complete the expansion within two years (2026-2028), eliminating congestion and addressing the projected 2028 overcapacity.

Vietnam Infrastructure Development and Finance Investment Joint Stock Company (VIDIFI) reports that, after a decade of operation, traffic on the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway has quadrupled since its launch.

With six lanes and two emergency lanes, the expressway now experiences congestion, particularly during holidays and weekends. Expanding to ten lanes is timely and aligns with planning requirements.
