Vietnam to Launch 40km Metro Line, Funded by $2.6B Investment, Connecting Ho Chi Minh City to $16B Mega Project

The 41km metro line connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh Airport will be designed as a seamless, integrated system, eliminating the need for transfers. Dong Nai province has opted against a multi-leg journey, prioritizing a direct route to minimize investment costs and enhance passenger convenience.

On January 7th, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee, Ho Van Ha, chaired a meeting with the Department of Construction and the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board regarding the extension of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line to the Provincial Administrative Center and Long Thanh International Airport.

According to the Dong Nai Department of Construction, the project to extend the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line to the Provincial Administrative Center and Long Thanh Airport spans approximately 41.4 km within Dong Nai province. The line begins at the connection point with the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line (Ho Chi Minh City) and ends at Long Thanh Airport (Dong Nai).

The project is divided into three segments: Segment 1, from station S0 to the Provincial Administrative Center (SC), is 6.1 km long; Segment 2, from station SC to station SA on the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh railway, is 28.2 km long; and Segment 3, from station SA to the station within Long Thanh Airport, is 7.1 km long.

To connect the project with the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line, the Dong Nai Department of Construction stated that an additional 1.8 km segment from Suoi Tien Bus Station to station S0 will be constructed.

Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction announced that from station S0, the city will also invest in a metro line connecting to Binh Duong province.

During the meeting, representatives from both local authorities and investors proposed investment plans to ensure seamless connectivity between the metro lines.

In his concluding remarks, the Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee emphasized that this meeting was a preparatory step for a future meeting between leaders of the two localities to finalize the investment plans.

Moving forward, the Dong Nai Department of Construction will collaborate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction and the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board to refine the plans, particularly focusing on technology to integrate new metro lines with the existing Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien line. Priority will be given to direct connectivity without transfers to reduce costs and enhance convenience for passengers.

Previously, on December 10, 2025, during the 8th session, the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Council approved a resolution on the project to extend the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line to the Provincial Administrative Center and Long Thanh Airport.

The resolution designated the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee as the authorized agency to implement the project under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, spanning both Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City.

The proposed route follows the approved planning, starting from station S0 (Tan Van), crossing the Dong Nai River, running along National Highway 1, and connecting to station SC at the new Provincial Administrative Center. From there, a metro line will be constructed to connect to Long Thanh Airport.

The preliminary total investment for the project exceeds 60.261 trillion VND, including over 4.323 trillion VND for compensation and resettlement. The maximum design speed is 120 km/h (90 km/h in tunnels), and the maximum operating speed is 110 km/h (80 km/h in tunnels).

According to Dong Nai province, the current transportation system connecting Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City relies primarily on three modes: road, rail, and water, with road transport being the most dominant.

Dong Nai province also highlighted the urgent need to connect Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport to ensure their parallel operation. Therefore, expediting the development of other connectivity projects such as metro lines, high-speed railways, and inter-regional bridges is essential.

These initiatives will meet transportation demands, reduce travel time, and significantly shorten the connection between Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport.
