Cho Lach Commune (Vinh Long Province) was established through the merger of Hoa Nghia Commune, Long Thoi Commune, and Cho Lach Town, previously part of Cho Lach District, Ben Tre Province.

As the capital of ornamental plants and flowers in Vinh Long and the Mekong Delta, Cho Lach Commune boasts over 3,000 households engaged in the production of ornamental plants and flowers, accounting for approximately one-third of the commune’s population. Situated in the heart of the Mekong Delta’s rice granary, the commune has largely shifted away from rice cultivation, a transition that began over 20 years ago.

According to the People’s Committee of Cho Lach Commune, the commune currently has nearly 3.1 million ornamental plants and flowers for the Tet market. To date, approximately 86% of these products have been sold (53% in gardens and 33% in markets).

The ornamental plants and flowers from Cho Lach’s gardens are highly favored in the market. So far, products like chrysanthemums, marigolds, and cockscombs have been 95% pre-ordered; kumquat trees are at 90%, and yellow apricot and paper flowers are at 80% of their production volume. Overall, Tet flower sales this year are better than last year, with prices also increasing.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thiem (An Hoa Hamlet, Cho Lach Commune) shared that her family produces various ornamental plants and flowers for Tet, notably chrysanthemum baskets. This year, her family has 1,700 pairs of grade-1 chrysanthemum baskets, which have been pre-ordered at 180,000 VND per pair and will soon be transported to Hanoi.

Ms. Thiem’s chrysanthemum garden is beginning to bloom, awaiting transportation.

Of the nearly 3.1 million ornamental plants and flowers in Cho Lach Commune, flowers like chrysanthemums, marigolds, and cockscombs account for the majority, with 1.8 million products.

The Tet flower season also provides good income opportunities for local workers. Currently, Ms. Thiem’s garden employs nearly 10 people to prune leaves to prepare for Tet sales.

Ms. Bui Thi Thuy Lieu shared that workers earn about 200,000 VND per day (from morning to 2 PM), and up to 300,000 VND if they work overtime until the end of the day.

Each pair of Dutch chrysanthemum pots averages around 130,000 VND.

According to the People’s Committee of Cho Lach Commune, the prices of flowers and ornamental plants in gardens this year are 5-10% higher than last year, averaging 160,000 VND per pair of chrysanthemums, 70,000 VND per pair of marigolds, and 60,000 VND per pair of hanging flowers. Yellow apricot and paper flowers have also increased by 5-10% compared to last year.

Mai Chieu Thuy trees (also known as Mai Chan Thuy) are also being pruned in preparation for blooming.

Mr. Tran Huu Nghi, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Cho Lach Commune, stated that the production of fruits, ornamental plants, and flowers in 2025 has met and exceeded targets. However, the locality faces challenges due to saltwater intrusion, while the local budget remains limited for implementing freshwater storage and salinity prevention solutions. The commune regularly updates information on weather and salinity intrusion to help residents stay informed and proactively manage production.

According to Mr. Nghi, the commune aims to develop Cho Lach into a high-quality ornamental plant and flower hub, perfecting and advancing the production processes of key plant varieties, and building the Cho Lach ornamental plant and flower brand.
