After over 15 years of development, the Van Dien – Ngoc Hoi section of National Highway 1A has been officially opened. This vital southern gateway to Hanoi has been expanded to 8 lanes, significantly reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the urban landscape.

Approved by Hanoi People’s Committee in 2010, the project boasts a total investment of nearly 900 billion VND. Spanning approximately 3.8 km, it stretches from Ngoc Hoi Martyrs’ Cemetery to Yen Phu Pagoda, traversing the communes of Tu Hiep, Ngu Hiep, Ngoc Hoi, and Lien Ninh (formerly Thanh Tri District).

This critical transportation artery connects southern Hanoi with neighboring provinces, enduring heavy traffic from inter-provincial vehicles and heavy trucks.

The main carriageway is now substantially complete, facilitating smooth traffic flow. Expanded to 8 lanes with a cross-section width of nearly 40 meters, the road offers a more spacious and congestion-free experience compared to its previously cramped conditions.

Ongoing work includes median strips, high-voltage power poles, and technical infrastructure to ensure traffic safety and urban aesthetics upon full operation.

Near Yen Phu Pagoda, the road has been asphalted, easing travel for residents and vehicles. Remaining components are being concurrently completed by contractors to meet the project’s overall timeline.

The long-awaited expansion has brought joy to residents along the route. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung from Ngoc Hoi Commune recalls the previous challenges: “The narrow road was often overwhelmed, especially during peak hours. Now, with the expansion, travel is much smoother, and we hope congestion will significantly decrease.”

Mrs. Tran Thi Hanh, 72, who lives near the highway, shares her relief: “The prolonged construction caused muddy conditions in rain and dust in dry weather, making life difficult. Now, with cleaner roads, we feel much more at ease.”

Sidewalks in residential areas are also under synchronized construction, enhancing urban infrastructure and safety for residents along National Highway 1A.

All project components are slated for completion and operational readiness by Q1 2026.

Upon completion, the Van Dien – Ngoc Hoi section of National Highway 1A is expected to alleviate long-standing congestion, meet growing travel demands, and modernize southern Hanoi’s infrastructure.
