The Phase 2 project, which includes the construction of Thuong Cat Bridge and its connecting roads, was launched by the Hanoi People’s Committee on October 8, 2025. This key city-level project commemorates the 71st anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025) and the 18th Congress of the City Party Committee, leading up to the 14th National Party Congress.

With a total investment exceeding 7.3 trillion VND, this bridge spanning the Red River is expected to establish a vital connection between the northern bank of the Red River and central Hanoi.

According to the plan, the project is scheduled for completion and operation in 2027. (The image depicts the envisioned Thuong Cat Bridge spanning the Red River upon completion.)

The project begins at Km3+504 on Ky Vu Road (Thuong Cat Ward) and ends at Km8+731 on National Highway 23B (Thien Loc Commune).

Thuong Cat Bridge is designed as a cable-stayed bridge with a total length of over 5.2 km, including the main bridge span of approximately 3.9 km and connecting roads spanning 1.3 km.

The bridge features a wide deck accommodating 8 lanes, including 6 motorized lanes and 2 non-motorized lanes, designed to meet high traffic demands and support long-term transportation development.

As observed in early January 2026, the Thuong Cat Bridge construction site is bustling with activity.

The construction team has mobilized machinery, materials, and manpower to initiate the first foundation works.

Thuong Cat Bridge plays a crucial role in enhancing the transportation infrastructure north of the Red River, fostering connectivity between this area and central Hanoi.

The project is also pivotal in completing the Ring Road 3.5, enhancing connectivity between the northwest region and the city center, while alleviating traffic on the existing Ring Road 3.

Upon completion, Thuong Cat Bridge is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion on major bridges like Thang Long and Nhat Tan. Additionally, it will contribute to the capital’s master plan, driving development in Dong Anh District, particularly along National Highway 23B.
