Today, on January 15th, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ben Thanh – Tham Luong section of Metro Line 2. The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board selected Truong Hai Group (THACO) as the main contractor for the EPC package, encompassing design, equipment procurement, construction, and installation.

Notably, several prominent firms previously expressed interest in this project. Deo Ca Group, representing the Deo Ca – Fecon – PowerChina – Sucgi consortium, proposed applying National Assembly Resolution 188 mechanisms to directly award the contract. Additionally, the Dai Dung Group – Construction Corporation No. 1 (CC1) – Hoa Phat Group consortium also submitted a bid to invest and construct Metro Line 2.

According to the plan, Metro Line 2 will connect to Ben Thanh Station on Metro Line 1 at its starting point and terminate at Tham Luong Depot. The line will intersect with Line 3 at Tao Dan Station, Line 5 at Bay Hien Station, and Line 6 at Ba Queo Station.

Station designs have been optimized to enhance connectivity and reduce walking distances. For instance, Tao Dan Station has been shortened to 244.6 meters for seamless integration with Metro Line 3. At Bay Hien Station, adjustments enable direct connections between Line 2 and Line 5 platforms.

Initially, Metro Line 2 will operate three-car trains with a maximum speed of 80–110 km/h, transporting approximately 14,400 passengers per hour per direction. Upon completion, six-car trains will increase capacity to over 40,500 passengers per hour per direction, meeting growing urban transportation demands.

The approved 11.3 km line includes 9.3 km underground and nearly 2 km elevated sections. With a total investment exceeding 55 trillion VND, the project is scheduled for completion by Q4/2030.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Bui Xuan Cuong emphasized the project’s significance for the urban railway network, modern infrastructure development, and economic-social growth. “I am confident Metro Line 2 will be completed on schedule, enabling synchronized operation with Line 1 and paving the way for future projects connecting Thu Thiem Urban Area and Long Thanh International Airport by 2026,” he stated.
