The Metro Line 2 project (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) has a total investment of approximately VND 55,179 billion, fully funded by the city’s budget. This line is identified as a crucial central axis, connecting the downtown area with the northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Below are the renderings of Metro Line 2 and some stations provided by the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board.

The starting point of the line is Ben Thanh Station, the “heart” of the urban railway network, where multiple metro lines converge.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, beyond their transportation function, the stations of Metro Line 2 are also designed to become distinctive architectural spaces, harmoniously blending modern functionality with urban identity. Each station serves not only as a passenger transit point but also as an aesthetic highlight, enriching the underground landscape of the city. Tao Dan underground station, inspired by cultural parks, features a modern vaulted roof design resembling spring butterflies.

The versatile multi-colored lighting system creates vibrant and emotionally rich visual effects.

The entire station space is designed as an “underground garden,” offering a serene and gentle atmosphere for passengers amidst the bustling city, while showcasing the cultural beauty and modern elegance of Ho Chi Minh City.

Located near Tan Son Nhat Airport, Tan Binh Station’s design draws inspiration from the dynamic aerodynamics of airplanes, reflecting a modern and vibrant image suitable for this key transportation hub.

Ben Thanh Station’s design draws inspiration from the Saigon River, with architecture focused on depicting the fluidity of water waves.

Ben Thanh Station features modern architecture and equipment, with lighting adjusted based on passenger flow, ensuring energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.

In the first phase, the Ben Thanh – Tham Luong section spans approximately 11.3 km, including 9.3 km underground and 2 km elevated, with 10 underground stations, 1 elevated station, and 1 depot.

During the initial operation phase, Metro Line 2 will use 3-car trains, each car 22 meters long, with a maximum speed of 80–110 km/h, transporting over 14,400 passengers per hour per direction during peak hours. Upon completion, the line will switch to 6-car trains, increasing capacity to over 40,500 passengers per hour per direction.

Automated Train Operation, No Driver Required

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, Metro Line 2 is designed to meet European standards, incorporating advanced technical solutions while fully complying with Vietnam’s current regulations and standards.

Specifically, the line will upgrade to GoA4 automation, enabling fully automated train operation without drivers or onboard staff. Comprehensive automated functions include startup, self-checks, deployment on the main line, stopping and departing from stations, turning, cabin switching, passenger evacuation, removal from the main line, and transitioning to standby mode.

In emergencies or special operational requirements, remote control can be executed by staff at the Operation Control Center (OCC), ensuring absolute passenger safety and stable line operation.
