On January 16th, the People’s Court of District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, commenced the first-instance trial of defendant Dinh Thi Lan (49 years old, owner of the YouTube channel Lan Dinh) on charges of “Abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, lawful rights, and interests of organizations and individuals” under Article 331 of the Penal Code.

According to the decision to bring the case to trial, Mrs. Nguyen Phuong Hang, Mr. Huynh Uy Dung, Dai Nam Joint Stock Company, and the Hang Huu Charity Fund were summoned as related parties with rights and obligations.

Both Mrs. Hang and her husband were represented by lawyers to protect their legal rights and interests, but neither was present at the trial. Dai Nam Joint Stock Company submitted a request for an in-absentia trial.

At the beginning of the trial proceedings, the defendant stated she was the former chairwoman of VinaWorld Limited Company: “I am an entrepreneur like Mrs. Nguyen Phuong Hang.”

Ms. Dinh Thi Lan requested a postponement of the trial. “The reason for the request is that the investigative agency has not yet addressed my inquiries regarding the investigation conclusions,” Ms. Lan explained.

According to the indictment, in 2021, Ms. Lan used her personal YouTube account “Lan Dinh” to upload six videos containing false information, unverified claims, or invasions of privacy. These statements were deemed to seriously damage the reputation and honor of Mrs. Nguyen Phuong Hang, Mr. Huynh Uy Dung, and their families.

Prosecutors asserted that Ms. Lan’s actions not only violated the legal rights of individuals but also breached the 2018 Cybersecurity Law, negatively impacting social security and order.
