Can the Vietnam-Assembled Mazda CX-3 Replace the Discontinued Model and Compete with the Yaris Cross?

The news of Mazda CX-3 and Mazda2 being discontinued globally by 2026 has sparked widespread speculation. However, these models may be replaced by entirely new offerings within the same segment.

Currently, the Mazda2 and CX-3 are beginning to lag behind their competitors, much like marathon runners who have started to tire and lose their drive to cross the finish line. Both models have been on the market since 2014, enduring numerous updates and minor tweaks to maintain a semblance of freshness.

However, every vehicle eventually reaches its end, and for Mazda’s smallest offerings, that moment seems imminent. According to a report from Japan’s Creative Trend, based on internal dealership documents, Mazda plans to halt production of both the Mazda2 and CX-3 by 2026.

The specific timeline indicates that the CX-3 will exit production first in March, followed by the Mazda2 in June 2026. This news may be of particular interest to Vietnamese consumers, as the CX-3 only recently transitioned to domestic assembly late last year. Meanwhile, the Mazda2 continues to be imported from Thailand.

Despite speculation that Mazda might withdraw entirely from the B-segment, the Hiroshima-based automaker appears to have other plans. The most evident successor to the Mazda2 is the Vision X-Compact Concept, unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. This modern hatchback, integrated with AI technology, is approximately 255 mm shorter than the current Mazda2.

Meanwhile, Mazda remains committed to the urban SUV segment currently dominated by the CX-3, thanks to its steady sales. At an official presentation in Thailand earlier this year, the company teased sketches of a new SUV with a spacious, sleek design inspired by the CX-5. This rumored successor, potentially named the CX-20, is expected to compete directly with rivals like the Toyota Yaris Cross and Mitsubishi Xforce.

This strategic move will be crucial for Mazda to maintain its market influence once its current “legacy” models complete their production run in 2026.
