Since the inauguration of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, there has been a significant surge in traffic from Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta provinces. The most severe bottleneck is at the Dong Tam intersection, where National Highway 1 meets the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge access road.

Dong Tam intersection frequently experiences heavy traffic congestion during weekends, holidays, and Tet.

Observations reveal that during weekends, holidays, and the recent New Year’s celebrations, traffic congestion stretching for kilometers has become a common occurrence at the Dong Tam intersection. Despite the traffic police’s efforts to manage traffic flow and adjust signal timings, these measures remain temporary fixes, failing to permanently resolve the gridlock issue.

Mr. Phan Vinh Thanh, Deputy Director of Dong Thap Province’s Department of Construction, discusses plans for an overpass at Dong Tam intersection.

During the January 2016 press briefing, Mr. Phan Vinh Thanh, Deputy Director of Dong Thap Province’s Department of Construction, announced that the department is collaborating with the My Thuan Project Management Board (Ministry of Construction) to finalize plans for an overpass at this junction.

In the interim, the Department of Construction is working with law enforcement to manage traffic flow and adjust traffic signals at the Dong Tam intersection to alleviate congestion, though a comprehensive solution remains elusive.

According to Mr. Thanh, the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project has a completion deadline of 2027 and has not yet exhausted its allocated funds. Therefore, Dong Thap Province has proposed constructing an overpass at the Dong Tam intersection, with an estimated cost of 248 billion VND, utilizing surplus funds from the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project.

“We are currently assessing land clearance options, with the overpass project expected to commence in 2026 and be completed by 2027,” Mr. Thanh stated.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge is not only a critical transportation link connecting the two banks of the Tien River but also a vital artery that alleviates the severe congestion on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge, which has been overburdened for years.

The addition of an overpass at the Dong Tam intersection is anticipated to fully decongest the vital route linking Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta provinces.

The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project spans the Tien River, connecting Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces. Construction began in March 2022, with a total investment of 6.81 trillion VND.

On August 19, 2025, the bridge was opened to traffic, addressing the longstanding congestion issues on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge.
