On the morning of January 28th, at the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone (Kien Giang Province), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh inspected the progress of key infrastructure projects for the 2027 APEC Leaders’ Week.
During the inspection, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh directed Kien Giang Province to expedite land clearance with a long-term vision, ensuring compliance with the law and prioritizing the well-being of residents. New residences must meet or exceed the standards of their previous homes.
Critical components are progressing simultaneously, with construction volumes accelerating. Terminal T2’s basic construction is complete, and the VIP terminal is nearing finalization with significant progress.
The runway project is advancing rapidly, with a cumulative investment of approximately VND 2,370 billion. Key milestones include: runway completion by June 30, 2026; VIP terminal by September 30, 2026; and Terminal T2 (Phase 1) by December 30, 2026.
Regarding construction materials, the Prime Minister emphasized applying special mechanisms under Resolution No. 66.4/2025/NQ-CP, directly allocating quarries to investors and contractors to prevent corruption and waste.

The Prime Minister urged continued momentum with the spirit of “focus on action, not retreat”; “running while aligning”; “overcoming sun, rain, and storms”; “working day and night, including holidays”; and “eating and resting efficiently” to accelerate construction. Challenges should be reported immediately.
Encouraging workers, engineers, and staff, the Prime Minister highlighted that these projects enhance national prestige and infrastructure. For Phu Quoc International Airport, which operates during construction, he emphasized responsibility, unity, adherence to procedures, and creativity to meet deadlines.
Phu Quoc International Airport: A Symbol of National Prestige
The VND 22,000 billion expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport, managed by Sun Group’s subsidiary Sun Airport Company (SAC), began operations on January 1, 2026.
Designed to ICAO’s 4E standards, the airport will accommodate wide-body aircraft like Boeing 747, 787, and Airbus A350. Spanning 1,050 hectares, it will serve 20 million passengers annually, a 4.5-fold increase in capacity.
Infrastructure includes extending Runway 1 to 3,500m and adding Runway 2 at 3,300m. The apron will expand to over 120 parking positions, with 71 connected to modern jet bridges.
Advanced technologies will be integrated, including Total Airport Management (TAM), biometric systems for seamless travel, ICS baggage handling, automated parking, underground refueling, and remote-controlled jet bridges. These innovations aim for a 15-20 second processing time per passenger, positioning the airport as a regional smart hub.
Upon Phase 1 completion in 2027, the airport will achieve its 20 million passenger annual capacity.
