After 3 years of construction, phase 1 of Long Thanh airport project has taken shape and entered the climax phase with the simultaneous implementation of 3 key packaes: Package 5.10 (terminal building), Package 4.6 (runway, taxiway, apron), Package 6.12 (T1-T2 connection road).

Package 5.10, worth 35,000 billion VND, is the largest package, with the most complex technical nature and longest construction time among the component packages. After several delays due to failure to find contractors, the project finally selected a contractor for Package 5.10 and construction began at the end of August 2023.

According to representatives of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV – the project investor), in order to ensure progress, thousands of staff, engineers, and workers have been arranged to work day and night at the project. As of now, the progress of Package 5.10 is closely following the set plan.

According to PV VTC News, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, at the construction site of Long Thanh International Airport project, thousands of staff, engineers, and workers are still busy working. Not far from the construction site of the terminal building is the construction site of the non-movement control tower – a component of the project.

The non-movement control tower has taken shape. The tower is 123m high, with a construction area of about 80m2, and is considered the “brain” of the entire project.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Hai, Commander of the Contractor Consortium executing Package XD02, said that following the directions of the Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), the unit has concentrated on increasing the number of vehicles, machinery, and personnel working day and night, starting from 7am and ending at 11pm. Especially, this Lunar New Year, the project has more than 60 officials and workers staying and working throughout the Tet holiday.

Currently, workers and engineers are simultaneously implementing 4 construction fronts, including: non-movement control tower cluster, radar station, radio wave receiving station, dependent monitoring station.

Some items in Package XD02 are exceeding the set schedule.

Engineers and workers are working day and night, even through Tet, on the construction site of Long Thanh International Airport.

Workers are working diligently under the blazing 40 degrees Celsius heat.

Mr. Dang Van Phi and Mrs. Tran Thi Hong Tham (from An Giang province) are one of many couples working at the Long Thanh International Airport project. “This year, both of us stayed and worked, and we sent our two young children to our parents in the countryside. It’s a bit sad not to be home for Tet, but we think about the additional income for our expenses, so we try our best”, Mrs. Tham said.

The terminal building – the “heart” of the Long Thanh International Airport project at night. From above, the entire terminal building resembles a stylized lotus flower like the project’s design.

In addition to maximizing the staff to stay and work throughout Tet, additional machinery has also been reinforced to accelerate the construction progress of the packages.

Engineers, workers are working overnight, working through Tet on the construction site of Long Thanh International Airport.

Officials, engineers, and workers staying through Tet are always encouraged from the beginning. In addition to the 3-fold increase in income according to state regulations, care for spiritual life during the Tet days is also implemented.

The Commander of Package XD02 organized a Tet celebration at the construction site for officials, engineers, and workers staying. Ochna integerrima, chrysanthemums, cockscomb flowers were brought in.

Excited because even though staying at the construction site, they can still immerse themselves in the Tet atmosphere, many workers cannot hide their joy. On New Year’s Eve, the construction site will organize a small party with traditional Vietnamese cuisine such as square glutinous rice cake, bitter melon stuffed with lean pork, caramelized pork… a typical Tet feast for those who stay to celebrate together.

Long Thanh International Airport is a national key project with an estimated capital of about $5 billion (about 110,000 billion VND) and a total area of 5,364 hectares. When completed, Long Thanh Airport will reach level 4F according to the hierarchy of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and will become the largest airport in Vietnam.

Aiming to become one of the bustling international transit airports in the region, with significant implications for socio-economic development and national defense and security, the airport will have a capacity to serve up to 100 million passengers per year.

The Long Thanh International Airport project is divided into 3 construction phases: Phase 1 (2021-2025); Phase 2 (2025-2030); Phase 3 (2035-2040). The government aims to have the first flight take off from Long Thanh Airport in 2026.
