Mazda is developing the next-generation CX-5, potentially renaming it to CX-40, highly anticipated if it comes with rear-wheel drive.

The Mazda CX-5 is the longest-running model in Mazda's lineup at the moment and is in desperate need of a refresh or risks fading into oblivion.

The Mazda CX-5 is the oldest model in the current Mazda lineup. The car was introduced in 2012 and received a facelift in 2016, which means it has been 8 years since the car was upgraded in its lifecycle. Compared to its larger and more modern sibling, the CX-50, the Mazda CX-5 has fallen behind.

Despite still having acceptable sales in the regions it is sold, the Mazda CX-5 needs an upgrade with more modern technologies than ever before. According to Whichcar, a reputable source from Australia, the next generation of the CX-5 is being developed.

This information was revealed to them by Mazda Australia CEO Vinesh Bhindi, but he did not share anything more about the project.

According to the same newspaper, the Mazda CX-5 will be renamed CX-40 to fit in between the current CX-30 and CX-50 in terms of size. This name has been trademarked by the Japanese brand for quite some time now (since July 2019).

Meanwhile, the old CX-5 name could be used for an electric SUV. Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly has previously hinted that an electric vehicle using the “existing name” will enter this market from 2025.

It is not yet known which platform will be used for the new Mazda CX-40/CX-5. Depending on whether the chassis is a rear-wheel drive type like the CX-60 to CX-90 lineup or just an improved version of the current front-wheel drive chassis, the engines used will be very different.

Looking at the current CX-30/CX-50 positions, the possibility of the new CX-40/CX-5 switching to a new chassis is not high.
