Xiaomi recently introduced the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the company’s flagship smartphone of 2024 and the “grand finale” of the Xiaomi 14 series. The device was first unveiled in China and later in European countries at the upcoming MWC 2024.
Design
While it may not look much different from its predecessor at first glance, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra has been refined in terms of design. The black and white versions feature a faux leather back and weigh 224.4g. The blue version, called Dragon Crystal, has a slightly higher weight of 229.5g.
Lastly, there is a special Titanium Special Edition weighing 229.6g. Xiaomi states that the titanium material used in this version is “Grade 5” (Grade 5), similar to the iPhone 15 Pro and higher than the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Camera System
Similar to its predecessor, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra retains its 4-camera system with 50MP resolution at 0.5x, 1X, 3.2X, and 5x zoom.
The main sensor is still a 1-inch type, but it is the latest Sony LYT-900 sensor with improved design and faster speed. The lens technically remains a dual-aperture lens at 23mm, with a wide aperture range between f/1.63 and f/4.0, allowing for 136% more light capture compared to the f/1.9 and f/4.0 lens of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. Xiaomi refers to this mechanism as an infinite aperture, suggesting that it can operate at any point between f/1.63 and f/4.0, although the Xiaomi website and presentation only display sample images at two aperture levels, f/1.63 and f/4.0.
The zoom lenses include a regular 3.2X 75mm f/1.8 lens and a telephoto 5X 120mm f/2.5 lens, both sharing the Sony IMX858 1/2.5-inch sensor with the 12mm f/1.8 ultrawide lens. The 120mm telephoto lens has been upgraded from f/3.0 to f/2.5.
Xiaomi compared the low-light performance of the telephoto cameras between the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro series, showing that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s 120mm f/2.5 lens captures more light than the iPhone 15 Pro Max lens by 196% and more light than the iPhone 15 Pro lens by 474%. Xiaomi claims that the 14 Ultra can achieve AI Zoom 30X, which it believes is superior to its competitors.
Display
In terms of specifications, the display remains the same with a 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED panel, 1440 x 3200 resolution, a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, and support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+. The brightness of the display has slightly increased to 3,000 nits (compared to 2,600 nits).
Xiaomi refers to the glass on the screen as Shield Glass and claims that it has over 10 times higher drop resistance and is also tougher. The corners of the display are gently curved on all sides, and Xiaomi calls this an All Around Liquid display.
Performance
Unsurprisingly, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra features the latest and most powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of internal storage. The cooling system has been improved with a 3 times larger vapor chamber.
The battery is about 6% larger at 5,300mAh and supports either wired fast charging at 90W or wireless charging at 80W. The battery is protected by G1 and P2 over-current protection chips.
The Xiaomi 14 Ultra offers two-way satellite communication. The phone features a T1 signal-enhancing chip that improves mobile, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections.
