Ho Chi Minh City to offer discounted tickets for the initial period of operation of Metro line 1

Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Mr. Phan Van Mai, has instructed the Urban Railway Management Board to submit a proposal for ticket price waivers/reductions during the initial operation period of Metro Line 1.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Office has just announced the conclusions of Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Phan Van Mai at the first meeting of the Steering Committee for key projects and works of the city.

The Chairman of the People’s Committee assigned many tasks to departments, industries, and localities to accelerate the progress of key projects and works.

Regarding the construction of Belt Road 2 project (section 1 and section 2), the Chairman of the People’s Committee assigned the People’s Committee of Thu Duc City to urgently develop a detailed plan and carry out surveys to accurately determine the compensation and site clearance costs. Focus on completing the compensation and site clearance work to commence the project in 2024.

Regarding the construction of Belt Road 3 project, focus on completing the handover of construction sites in the first quarter of 2024. The Department of Transport should take the lead and coordinate with relevant departments, units for research and the implementation of phase 2 of the project.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment should take the lead and coordinate with the Project Management Board for planning and construction of transportation works and related units to work actively with the relevant districts regarding the sand source for the project.

Regarding the construction of Belt Road 4 project, the Department of Transport should complete the investment proposal; advise and report to the People’s Committee and propose specific implementation methods to submit to Central agencies for investment decisions. Completion deadline is June 2024.

Regarding the Ho Chi Minh City – Moc Bai Expressway project, the Department of Planning and Investment should take the lead and work with the Planning and Investment Board to report to the interdisciplinary evaluation council for decision-making authority according to regulations. At the same time, urgently propose to the People’s Committee to select domestic investors to implement the project; completion deadline is February 2024.

Regarding Metro line 1 Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien project, the Project Management Board should provide detailed plans for operation and commercial exploitation of the line by July 2024.

At the same time, report to the People’s Committee to submit to the Party Committee’s Permanent Board for selecting the method of waiving/reducing fares during the initial operation period of Metro line 1 to encourage the habit of using public transportation in the form of metro for the public.

Regarding the dredging, environmental improvement, and construction of Xuyen Tam canal infrastructure (from Nhiêu Lộc – Thi Nghe canal to Vam Thuat river), the Chairman of the People’s Committee assigned the relevant agencies to actively coordinate with the Go Vap and Binh Thanh district People’s Committees to focus on completing the handover of construction sites in Go Vap district in the first quarter and in Binh Thanh district in 2024.

The Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien Metro has a total investment capital of over VND 43,700 billion, with a length of nearly 20 km including 3 underground and 11 elevated stations. This is the first urban railway project in Ho Chi Minh City, achieving over 97% completion after nearly 12 years of construction.

In the Lunar New Year of 2024 (Year of the Dragon), 17 trains of Metro line 1 have been running continuously, testing systems for commercial operation starting from July.

Prior to that, in 2023, the trains of Metro line 1 had several trial runs, including internal technical testing and carrying passengers for visits.

The trains of Metro line 1 are manufactured in Japan, consisting of 3 cars with a capacity of 930 passengers (147 seated passengers and 783 standing passengers).
