On the afternoon of March 12, Chairman of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Mr. Masatsugu Asakawa, visited the Selex Motors electric motorcycle factory in Yen Vien, Hanoi. This visit is part of the activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the cooperation between ADB and Vietnam.

Eliminating the concept of “maximum range” with electric motorcycles

At the factory, Selex CEO, Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc Nguyen, introduced to the ADB working delegation about the development process, production line, and Selex electric motorcycle ecosystem technology. Also during the factory visit, the Chairman of the Asian Development Bank and some members of the delegation experienced the electric motorcycle model developed by Selex.

Selex said that the company is the first and only electric motorcycle start-up in Southeast Asia to be invested by the Asian Development Bank through the ADB Ventures fund.

According to the company’s explanation, Selex Motors has attracted investment funds and received attention from reputable organizations and individuals worldwide because it has started up in difficult and important fields, but is able to control technology, supply chain, and has great potential for development.

In fact, Selex is the only manufacturer in Vietnam to wholesale electric motorcycles specialized for the transportation industry – the Selex Camel model. This electric bike model can remove the rear seat to carry goods, or even install specialized containers.

In addition, Selex believes that the company has been able to completely solve the inconvenience of charging. This is because Selex’s “electric pickup” motorcycles can swap batteries at battery swapping stations, which the company describes as the “new generation petrol stations for electric vehicles”.

Here, users can quickly swap for fully charged batteries in about 2 minutes instead of waiting for 8 hours to fully charge the battery. Also, thanks to the ability to quickly swap for fully charged batteries, Selex believes that the company has eliminated the concept of “maximum range”.

In real-life situations, Selex electric bike users can travel thousands of kilometers without the need to charge, as all they need to do is go to a battery swapping station and swap for a fully charged battery.

According to Selex, the company currently has about 100 battery swapping stations throughout Vietnam. Selex is also working to expand its battery swapping stations to make it more convenient for electric bike users.

80% of the motorcycle’s components are “Made in Vietnam”

In a press release sent to the media, Selex also mentioned that the company “has independently researched and developed the entire core technology of electric motorcycles, with 10 registered patents”. Currently, 80% of the components on Selex motorcycles are produced domestically, a localization rate that is highly appreciated by many experts.

Selex also stated that a study by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) showed that Selex’s solution helps service drivers increase their average income by 34%.
