All Flights Fully Booked: Hanoi to Dien Bien

The majestic landscape of Dien Bien is a magnet for travelers, especially with the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory approaching. Despite airlines ramping up their operations, tickets for flights between Hanoi and Dien Bien are sold out, and flights from Ho Chi Minh City have very limited availability.

All flights from Hanoi to Dien Bien for May 5-7 are sold out, according to a survey on May 4.

For May 5, there is only one flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Dien Bien with one-way tickets available, priced at nearly VND 4.5 million (excluding taxes and fees). No tickets are available for May 6.

On May 7, there is one direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Dien Bien with tickets priced at nearly VND 1.5 million per trip. On the same day, passengers can opt for a connecting flight departing in the early morning and arriving in Dien Bien around 12:30 pm, with prices starting from VND 2.4 million per trip.

In mid-April, Vietnam Airlines announced a nearly doubled flight frequency to Dien Bien from May 3-8. Specifically, the airline operates three daily flights from Hanoi to Dien Bien and vice versa. These flights cater to the increased travel demand, offering convenient departure times, and supporting the organization of events in Dien Bien province.

The airline currently operates 11 weekly flights between Hanoi and Dien Bien, a significant increase from the initial phase when the Dien Bien airport resumed operations. All flights are serviced by Airbus A321 aircraft.

Vietjet Airlines has recently launched a new route from Hanoi to Dien Bien with a frequency of three weekly flights. During this period, Vietjet also increased the frequency of the Ho Chi Minh City – Dien Bien route to three flights per week.

Air travel demand from Hanoi to Dien Bien has surged due to the significantly shorter travel time of approximately 1 hour compared to 9-12 hours by car.

According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), passenger traffic to and from Dien Bien has surged in recent days, reaching up to five times the volume during the low season.

Currently, there are 6-8 daily flights to and from Dien Bien from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Dien Bien airport serves nearly 1,000 passengers per day, a significant increase from the previous figure of just over 200 passengers per day. Notably, both domestic and international passenger numbers have risen.

On May 6-7, Dien Bien airport is expected to handle 18 flights per day.

The National Tourism Year – Dien Bien 2024 is a large-scale cultural, economic, and social event, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 – May 7, 2024). Dien Bien is expected to welcome 1.3 million visitors this year.

On December 2, 2023, Dien Bien Airport resumed operations after a temporary closure for expansion and upgrade works. The airport now features an apron with four parking positions, including three spots for A320/A321 aircraft or equivalent and one spot for ATR72 aircraft or smaller.

The Dien Bien passenger terminal has been renovated and upgraded with modern and synchronized equipment, providing ample space to serve passengers and facilitating both aviation operations and non-aviation services.
