Manulife Life Insurance Company has confirmed that three of its clients were among the victims of the fire that broke out on May 24 in the Trung Hoa ward of Cau Giay district, Hanoi, claiming the lives of 14 individuals.
One of the clients had already reached the maturity date of their contract, while the remaining two are estimated to receive a total of VND 2 billion in compensation, with Manulife currently processing the payments as the families finalize funeral arrangements.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Insurance Supervisory Authority (ISA) under the Ministry of Finance has requested that life insurance companies promptly gather information, review, and report on the status of insurance benefit payments to the fire victims.
The ISA’s document urged insurance companies to proactively coordinate with relevant agencies, organizations, and individuals to assess losses and damages related to insured entities. It also instructed them to promptly provide advance payments, insurance compensation, and insurance payouts to the insured parties, beneficiaries, or insured individuals as per the insurance contracts and legal regulations.
Immediately upon learning of the fire, insurance companies sprang into action, reviewing customer information to offer timely assistance and make compensation decisions.
The fire, which started at 0:30 am on May 24, ravaged a house located at 1, alley 43/98/31 on Trung Kinh street in Trung Hoa ward. The two-story house with a mezzanine accommodated seven members of the landlord’s family, while the three-story boarding house with four rooms on each floor housed 17 tenants. The spacious 55-square-meter courtyard in between served as a parking lot for motorcycles and electric bikes and also doubled as an electric bike repair shop run by the landlord’s son.
The blaze resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives, including two from the landlord’s family and 12 tenants. Another six individuals sustained injuries.
