On July 6th, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Quang Tri Airport project in Gio Linh district.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Vo Van Hung, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, affirmed that the Quang Tri Airport is a project that symbolizes peace and realizes the aspiration of “Opening the Sky – Taking Off” of the provincial authorities and people. The planning and investment in this project hold great significance, as it will become a symbol of peace, cooperation, development, and integration.

The project serves as a catalyst for the province’s rapid and sustainable development, offering Quang Tri the opportunity to connect via air travel and shorten the journey between the North and South.

The Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee instructed the departments, branches, and localities to consider this as one of their key political tasks, actively coordinating and accompanying the investor to resolve related issues to expedite the project’s progress. The People’s Committee of Gio Linh district should adhere to the principle of ensuring that “Affected residents must be resettled in a better place than their previous residence.”

Mr. Vo Van Hung also requested that the investor consortium mobilize sufficient human resources, materials, equipment, and vehicles to implement the project while ensuring timely progress, quality, and environmental protection in the surrounding areas. Additionally, they should prioritize hiring and creating job opportunities for local people, especially those households affected by land clearance and site clearance for the project.

Located in the communes of Gio Quang, Gio Hai, and Gio Mai in Gio Linh district, the Quang Tri Airport project spans over 265 hectares and has a total investment of more than VND 5,800 billion. It is designed to meet the standards of a 4C-class civil airport and a military airport of level II, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code.

The airport will be capable of accommodating Code E aircraft and handling up to 5 million passengers and 25,500 tons of cargo annually. The project is undertaken by the T&T and Cienco 4 joint venture.
