“The Call to Action: ‘Vinfast’s ‘Vibrant Vietnamese Spirit – For a Green Future’ is Meaningless Without Collective Action from Businesses and Citizens.”

"The success of this environmental protection campaign relies on the support and unity of the community. It is not the sole responsibility of Vingroup or VinFast, but a collective effort of all citizens," emphasized Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, from the Vietnam Clean Air Network and the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection.

Vingroup, VinFast has launched a program called “Fierce Vietnamese Spirit – For a Green Future” with strong policies to support users’ transition to green transportation, including free electric vehicle charging, priority parking, and dedicated lanes at select services within the Vingroup ecosystem.

Many experts consider these policies to be unprecedented in the market, pioneering a shift towards a green economy and green growth.

According to Dr. Le Xuan Nghia, former Vice Chairman of the National Financial Supervisory Commission, Vingroup’s campaign is highly inspiring. Rarely have businesses approached the issue of energy transition and green transformation in transportation as boldly as Vingroup: their efforts are helping to make the government’s Net Zero goal more achievable.

“Vingroup and VinFast’s pioneering and leading role is not only awakening but also inspiring the business community to join hands in building a greener future,”

said Dr. Nghia.

Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, also emphasized the significant impact of Vingroup’s bold actions on society, stating that environmental protection and green transition are not optional but imperative.

While Vietnam has made positive commitments and taken active steps towards green development, Professor Thien objectively assessed that:

“Essentially, Vietnam is still in a ‘Brown’ state.”

He also pointed out that there is a lack of understanding of the true concept of ‘Green’, its mechanisms, values, and the path to transition from ‘Brown’ to ‘Green’ in the country.

“Vingroup’s approach is like a rallying cry, urging everyone to take action, foster social awareness, and turn commitments into actions,”

Professor Thien appealed for the collective efforts of every citizen in the green transition journey.

Notably, Vingroup has not only initiated this movement but has also made additional commitments and taken concrete actions, utilizing their own financial resources to achieve tangible results.

According to Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, from the Vietnam Clean Air Network, VinFast’s Clean Air Network, and the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection, VinFast’s efforts are commendable, not only for introducing green products but also for creating conditions for their widespread use. He emphasized that while manufacturing electric vehicles is challenging, the real task lies in market development and encouraging users to adopt these vehicles.

To reduce the number of fossil fuel vehicles that contribute to pollution, infrastructure development is crucial. VinFast has made significant efforts in this regard, establishing charging stations and offering free charging and parking for several years to encourage and incentivize users. They have also made robust commitments regarding warranty and maintenance policies.

“These actions have a ripple effect, and the practical results are recognized at the social level. This is the future value for Vietnam, harmonizing the interests of society, businesses, and citizens,”

Professor Thien asserted.

Looking deeper, despite a company’s financial strength, tackling pollution or building a green future alone is impossible. It is a grand mission and the collective responsibility of society, not solely that of individuals or entities.

Dr. Hoang Duong Tung emphasized that to go far, we must go together, and the first step is to gain the support and unity of the people.

“If the people do not support and unite, we will fail. This environmental protection journey is not the responsibility of a single entity, be it Vingroup, VinFast, or any other business, but of the entire community. This is a powerful message: only through the collective efforts of all can we achieve success.”

In this journey, in addition to the people’s unity, the government’s role is also crucial. Incentives and mechanisms should be put in place to encourage pioneering businesses like Vingroup.

“We must ensure that pioneering businesses do not suffer disadvantages as those who take the lead often face ‘storms,’”

the expert stated.

Referring to the supportive actions of the Korean and Japanese governments towards their domestic businesses, Professor Thien suggested that Vietnamese enterprises also need national commitments, especially as electric vehicles face intense future competition.

“All these efforts should be understood as supporting a Vietnamese product to compete in the international market, bringing national benefits and contributing to a green and clean Vietnam,”

Professor Thien emphasized.

Economist Pham Chi Lan offered a specific suggestion:

“Why doesn’t the government set a program with a deadline for all government vehicles to use green or pure electric vehicles, excluding other types?”

She also proposed tax and fee incentives related to the environment for organizations and businesses transitioning to green transportation.

Dr. Hoang Duong Tung expressed his hope that this transition would not be limited to electric taxis but would extend to all public transportation.

“Currently, sanitation workers face challenges in manually pushing garbage carts. I hope we can mechanize this process to improve source waste segregation in Hanoi. Mechanization can increase labor productivity, enhance cleanliness, and protect the environment. Using electric vehicles for garbage collection at night can reduce noise and make the work less strenuous.”

Additionally, the large number of motorcycles used for delivery services is another target for replacement, along with postal services and other public utilities.

“If the government, the business community, and consumers join hands with Vingroup in this green transition movement in transportation, the campaign will undoubtedly succeed, and it will be very meaningful and valuable for future generations,”

asserted Dr. Le Xuan Nghia.

Beyond building a sustainable future, Vietnamese consumers’ support for local brands like Vingroup and VinFast contributes to establishing a successful high-tech industrial brand with international recognition.

As Dr. Le Xuan Nghia shared, the key to successful industrialization lies in the manufacturing industry, with the automotive industry as its pillar. Establishing a successful Vietnamese automotive brand with global recognition holds economic significance and enhances Vietnam’s international standing.

However, developing such a brand is challenging. According to him, the difficulty arises not only from the automotive industry’s infancy but also from the long-standing presence of foreign automotive brands in Vietnam. Domestic automakers must compete with large, experienced, and financially and technologically strong rivals. In addition to business efforts, government support, a robust banking system, and consumer backing, especially from the younger generation, are crucial for the “battle” to establish a national industrial pillar.

In Vietnam, banks prioritize short-term projects, and there is a lack of financial resources focused on industry. Interest rates are also relatively high. Thus, it is fair to say that financial challenges for businesses like VinFast are significant.

Another challenge is the intense competition from foreign automakers and a segment of consumers’ preference for foreign brands. This situation is in stark contrast to South Korea, where consumers strongly favor domestic industrial products. Koreans, even those living abroad, demonstrate a strong sense of nationalism by choosing Korean-made vehicles. This is not just a source of spiritual strength but also a shield against international competition from other automotive brands. Dr. Le Xuan Nghia considers this a mirror for Vietnam and a lesson in building a robust industry in the future.

The automotive industry is measured in billions of dollars, and VinFast is at the forefront of this critical, cutting-edge sector.

“We are proud to be the only country in Southeast Asia with a Vietnamese automotive brand, even though we started late in the automotive industry. Malaysia and Thailand have yet to achieve this. VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, is among the 100 most influential companies in the world, according to TIME magazine’s ranking. This is a recognition by the world, and it is also a source of pride for Vietnamese businesses.”

Dr. Le Xuan Nghia believes that Vietnamese people can harness the power of national unity, similar to South Korea. Businesses like VinFast will be the precious “seeds of industry” for developing the industry and helping Vietnam achieve its goal of becoming a developed country with a high income and a leading industrial economy in Asia.
