Diphtheria situation complicates in Northern provinces
The number of diphtheria cases in Vietnam has decreased significantly since the introduction of the Expanded Immunization Program. However, in recent years, sporadic cases have been reported in some provinces among individuals who have not received booster shots or whose vaccination history is unknown.
Recently, an 18-year-old girl in Nghe An province was diagnosed with diphtheria and subsequently passed away, suspected to have contracted the disease from an infected student. The Nghe An Center for Disease Control and Prevention is urgently tracing close contacts, initially identifying 119 individuals, including one who has moved to Bac Giang province.
Long Chau launches a free Diphtheria-Tetanus vaccine program for individuals aged 60 and above
To increase the diphtheria-tetanus vaccination rate among the elderly and support the community in disease prevention, Long Chau has initiated a free Diphtheria-Tetanus vaccine program for those aged 60 and above. This age group is particularly vulnerable to diphtheria due to their weakened immune system, underlying health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues, as well as physiological changes in certain body organs, making it easier for the bacteria to invade and increasing the risk of severe complications.
The program commences on July 10, 2024, with 30 doses available per day per center. Residents of Nghe An and Bac Giang provinces can simply visit the nearest Long Chau vaccination center to obtain a free vaccination number. The program is being implemented at the following locations:
Long Chau Vaccination Center, Bac Giang province: 300 Le Loi, Hoang Van Thu Ward (Entrance of the Provincial General Hospital)
Long Chau Vaccination Centers, Nghe An province:
357 Nguyen Van Cu, Hung Binh Ward, Vinh City (Intersection of Doc Thiet Street)
155 Nguyen Phong Sac, Hung Dung Ward, Vinh City (Opposite the Cancer Hospital)
Block 4, Quan Hanh Town, Nghi Loc District (Quan Hanh Intersection)
Free Diphtheria and Tetanus vaccination for individuals aged 60 and above in Nghe An and Bac Giang provinces at Long Chau Vaccination Centers.
In addition to providing free vaccinations, Long Chau is also implementing disease prevention measures as advised by the Ministry of Health. This includes distributing masks and hand sanitizers to program participants and ensuring vaccination safety at all centers.
