In recent years, fuzzy custard apples have become a rare delicacy sought after by consumers, with prices soaring to four to five times that of regular custard apples.
Fuzzy custard apples are in high demand among food connoisseurs.
In Hanoi, Ms. Minh Thu, a trader specializing in distributing fuzzy custard apples in Cau Giay District, shared that the price per kilogram ranges from 170,000 to 180,000 VND, with each kilogram yielding approximately three fruits. She sells between 20 and 50 kilograms per day, a modest figure at the start of the season due to low supply from orchards, while the demand for this fruit remains high.
During the fuzzy custard apple season, Ms. Thu plans to hire two temporary employees to take orders and deliver the fruits to customers. “My store usually sells several hundred kilograms of fuzzy custard apples daily during the peak season,” she said.
Recognizing the demand, many fruit shops in Hanoi have shifted their focus to this commodity. Fuzzy custard apples from Dong Bang in Chi Lang District, Lang Son Province; Lien Khe in Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong City; and Dong Trieu Town in Quang Ninh Province are among the popular sources.

Speaking to Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Lien Khe Agricultural Services, Production, and Business Cooperative in Hai Phong, revealed that they have received numerous purchase requests from fruit traders and shop owners.
However, due to the limited supply at the beginning of the season, the cooperative can only fulfill orders from a few regular customers. Currently, the farm-gate price of fuzzy custard apples ranges from 145,000 to 150,000 VND per kilogram, a 10% increase compared to last year.
“We have received a lot of inquiries from customers, but we can only supply a small quantity. Our cooperative has 30 hectares of fuzzy custard apples grown according to VietGAP standards, yielding an average of 6-7 tons per hectare, resulting in a profit of nearly 500 million VND per hectare after deducting expenses,” said Mr. Hung.
He described Lien Khe fuzzy custard apples as large, aesthetically pleasing fruits with a pink blush when ripe, a glossy skin, white flesh, and a sweet, refreshing flavor without the grit sometimes found in other custard apples. Customers who try these apples often return for more.
Notably, the VietGAP-certified cultivation process ensures that each fruit that reaches the market meets high-quality standards and features a QR code for traceability, allowing consumers to confidently choose Lien Khe fuzzy custard apples.
According to the People’s Committee of Lien Khe Commune, the fuzzy custard apple has been designated as the key economic tree to boost agricultural development. The commune aims to expand the cultivation area to 100 hectares and actively seeks support from the government to protect and develop the collective brand.
Additionally, Lien Khe is working to penetrate the market through trade promotion activities, promoting the image and brand of Lien Khe fuzzy custard apples on e-commerce platforms, thus opening up new and promising opportunities for these apples in the domestic and international markets.
