Vietnamese businesses are thrilled about the recent announcement of officially exporting frozen durian to China, as shared by Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Director of Vina T&T Agricultural Product Export Company. This breakthrough will propel Vietnam’s durian industry to new heights in the coming years.
Mr. Tung highlights the benefits of exporting fresh durians to nearby markets, but with frozen durians, there’s an opportunity to reach deeper into China’s vast interior, catering to high-income consumers. The focus now shifts to cold storage capabilities to preserve the fruit.
While Vietnam will need to invest in large-scale, modern freezing systems, Mr. Tung assures that many companies have already invested in freezing technology for exporting durians to distant markets like the US and EU, so it’s not a significant concern.
The ability to export frozen durian to China addresses the pressure of peak harvest seasons. When fresh exports are not feasible, companies can opt for freezing, increasing export volume and value. Vina T&T alone forecasts a 30% annual revenue increase, equivalent to $25 million, from frozen durian exports to China.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary-General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), points out that with fresh durian, Vietnam has a year-round supply advantage. However, with frozen durian, the proximity to China becomes less of a competitive advantage against Thailand and Malaysia.
“In the future, China will likely increase its imports of frozen, peeled durian as it is more convenient and reduces transportation costs. Frozen durian has the potential to become a high-value commodity,” said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary-General of Vinafruit.
According to Mr. Nguyen, Vietnam has been exporting frozen durian to Thailand, the US, and Europe, generating hundreds of millions of dollars annually. With the Chinese market now open, durian exports are expected to surge to $3 billion, with frozen durian contributing $400-500 million this year.
Mr. Nguyen emphasizes the need to standardize durian varieties, upgrade freezing technology, and ensure food safety to capitalize on this opportunity. Vietnam’s Bureau of Plant Protection, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, will inspect facilities producing, processing, and storing frozen durian for exports to China. Only approved companies will be allowed to export to China.
