With just four months left in 2024, many stock investors are still anxious about whether to buy stocks, as the market remains risky after consecutive declines. What sectors and stocks offer potential profits before the year ends?
Addressing these concerns, Ms. Luu Hoang Ngoc Tram, Senior Customer Consultant at MB Securities Joint Stock Company (MBS), assessed that in the short term, the VN-Index will fluctuate around 1,290 points, as investors’ profit-taking needs are high after the market rose over 100 points from the bottom of 1,185 points.
Additionally, the fear of a potential US recession makes investors cautious about whether to “buy or stay on the sidelines.” However, the upcoming plan of the Federal Reserve (Fed) to cut interest rates will be a significant catalyst not only for the domestic market but also globally.
“The market adjustment after a sharp rise is an opportunity for investors to buy stocks. If a correction occurs, I expect it to be around 1220-1250 points. The sectors I am optimistic about during this period include retail, banking, real estate, public investment, seafood, and textiles,” said Ms. Tram.

According to Ms. Tram, the retail industry is recovering. Total retail sales of goods in the first half of the year continued to maintain positive growth. In the first five months, total retail sales of goods and services increased by 8.7% over the same period. Many stocks have already risen significantly, but the recovery prospect will last until 2025. Therefore, it is still possible to buy retail stocks during market corrections, with PNJ, MWG, and MSN being notable picks.
As one of the few basic sectors with relatively low valuations, bank stocks may be of interest, including MBB, TCB, HDB, BID, and CTG. Economic credit is showing signs of recovery after a decline at the end of July.
Regarding the real estate sector, since March 2024, the market has become more vibrant, with many projects launched and high absorption rates. The third and fourth quarters are usually the periods of revenue recognition, so it is possible to consider the stocks of enterprises with good prospects, large clean land funds, complete legal procedures, strong project implementation capacity, and safe financial structure: VHM, KDH, and NLG.
Some enterprises in the textile industry have order books filled until the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2024 and may increase from the end of the year when brands start preparing for the spring-summer 2025 season. Moreover, as inflation cools and consumer spending gradually recovers, prospective stocks include TNG and MSH.
For seafood stocks, investors can consider FMC, ANV, and VHC. Export prices of tra fish in markets such as the US, China, and the EU may continue to improve due to increasing demand and the need to replenish inventories before the year-end shopping season.
In the public investment sector, by the end of July, the disbursement rate according to the plan reached 34.68%, lower than the same period last year. Therefore, the parties involved will accelerate disbursement in the coming months. Stocks to watch in this sector include LCG, HHV, and VCG.
An expert suggested that with 300 million VND in capital, investors could allocate their portfolio into two high-growth sectors that benefit significantly when the economy recovers: retail and finance-banking. The two leading stocks in these sectors are MWG and MBB.
