ABU ROBOCON 2024 – SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT QUANG NINH TOURISM

The preparation and execution of the ABU Robocon 2024 competition, including the side activities and experiences, once again showcased Quang Ninh’s capability to host international-level events.

With 13 participating teams (including 2 from Vietnam) and a total of over 300 athletes, guests, and journalists from 12 countries and territories, including Hong Kong, Cambodia, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, and Nepal, the event was a vibrant and exciting affair, with intense matches held in Quang Ninh.

Although Team Vietnam 1 secured the runner-up position and Team Hong Kong (China) took the championship, the tournament was an impressive event that helped Quang Ninh move closer to its goal of attracting 19 million visitors in 2024.

During this event, Quang Ninh, along with 7 other provinces – Thua Thien Hue, Khanh Hoa, Bac Ninh, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Ninh Binh, Hai Duong, and Binh Duong – was officially oriented to become a centrally-governed city by 2030 (according to Decision No. 891/QD-TTg dated August 22, 2024, issued by the Prime Minister approving the Planning of the System of Urban and Rural Areas for the period 2021 – 2030, with a vision towards 2050).

THE IMPRESSIVE PEOPLE OF QUANG NINH

Aside from the excitement of the competition, the participants were deeply impressed by the delicious cuisine and stunning scenery of Quang Ninh. Ryoma Ishihara, from Team Japan, enthusiastically shared, “Everything was very professional, and we received maximum support from the moment we arrived in Vietnam. The hotel rooms offered a refreshing view of the blue sea and the mystical mountain ranges in the early morning mist.”

The competing teams also had the opportunity to visit the provincial museum, Ha Long fish market, and enjoy various cultural performances held as part of the competition, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the culture and traditions of the ethnic groups in Quang Ninh.

Tuvshintugs Sereenedori, from Team Mongolia, shared, “Although Mongolia is the 19th largest country in the world, we do not have a coastline, so when we arrived in Ha Long, we were thrilled by the white sandy beaches and the rows of coconut trees. Another interesting fact is that Mongolia exports coal, but we do not have a museum dedicated to coal mining like the one in Quang Ninh.”

The guests and participating teams showed great interest in destinations such as Bai Tu Long Bay, Van Don Archipelago, Co To, Yen Tu Historical Relic Site, and the relic site awaiting UNESCO recognition as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Even though they only spent a few days in Quang Ninh, the beauty of Ha Long, Van Don, and the captivating images of the coastal city left an unforgettable impression on the competition participants.

VAN DON – A PLASTIC-FREE TOURISM DESTINATION

Van Don is an island district of Quang Ninh province, boasting numerous breathtaking destinations that showcase the beauty of the sea and mountains, including mysterious and pristine caves. It is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the area. Months before the ABU Robocon 2024 competition, Van Don launched a program to reduce plastic waste in 5 island communes, aiming to prevent plastic waste from reaching the islands.

The local authorities collaborated with relevant units, the management of the international passenger port of Ao Tien and Cai Rong, and the 5 island communes to promptly install panels and posters with the theme “Do Not Bring Plastic Waste to the Island” to promote sustainable tourism free from plastic waste.

According to the district’s statistics, about 800-900 tons of oyster shells are generated monthly after gutting and packaging for processing. The authorities have guided the locals to recycle oyster shells for aquaculture and compost production.

Currently, approximately 40% of oyster shells are recycled into attachment substrates and then released back into the sea for oyster cultivation. 50% are collected and recycled into compost and animal feed, while the remaining 10% are treated as solid waste. The residents of the town and the communes actively participate in the “Green Sunday” movement, regularly cleaning and collecting trash from the beaches.

The district has also instructed tourism businesses to inspect and replace outdated equipment promptly and provide sufficient facilities for collecting and managing waste generated from beach and tourism activities.

Regularly organized programs like “Let’s Clean Up the Beach” have contributed to changing the awareness and actions of authorities, businesses, and the community in protecting the marine environment…
