The August Stock Market Rally: Indexes Surge, While Liquidity Slightly Dips

The Vietnamese stock market ended the last trading session of August 2024 on a positive note, with the VN-Index, VNAllshare, and VN30 all posting growth compared to the previous month of July. However, this growth was coupled with a decrease in liquidity, indicating a potential shift in market sentiment.

Closing out August 2024, the VN-Index reached 1,283.87 points, with VNAllshare and VN30 attaining 1,327.54 and 1,331.52 points, respectively. Compared to the previous month, the VN-Index, VNAllshare, and VN30 all witnessed increases of 2.59%, 2.24%, and 2.50%.

During August, apart from the materials sector index (VNMAT) and the industry sector index (VNIND) which declined by 3.65% and 1.57%, respectively, all other sector indices observed growth. Notably, the consumer sector index (VNCOND) surged by 6.32%, followed by the real estate sector index (VNREAL) at 5.21% and the information technology sector index (VNIT) with a 4.49% increase.

In terms of liquidity, the stock market witnessed an average trading volume of over 649 million shares per day, with an average trading value of more than VND 16,476 billion per day. This represented a 2.57% increase in volume and a 2.21% decrease in value compared to July 2024.

The average trading volume of covered warrants (CW) surpassed 49.34 million CW per day, with an average trading value of VND 33.51 billion per day. These figures reflect a 19.23% rise in volume and a 10.08% drop in value compared to the previous month.

Regarding ETF certificates, the average trading volume stood at 4.28 million ETF, while the average trading value exceeded VND 94.67 billion. This indicated a decrease of 17.91% in volume and 21.12% in trading value compared to July 2024.

Foreign investors’ total trading value in August 2024 surpassed VND 78,746 billion, accounting for over 10.86% of the entire market’s trading value. These investors net-sold during the month, with a net selling value of over VND 3,278 billion.

As of August 31, 2024, HOSE listed and traded 511 securities, encompassing 396 stocks, 4 closed-end fund certificates, 16 ETF certificates, and 95 covered warrants. The total market capitalization of listed securities exceeded 165 billion units. The HOSE’s stock market capitalization surpassed VND 5.27 quadrillion, equivalent to 51.58% of the GDP in 2023 (at current prices) and accounted for over 94.08% of the total market capitalization of listed stocks in the market.

In August 2024, one stock of Gelex Power Joint Stock Company (GEE) and one ABFVN DIAMOND ETF certificate managed by An Binh Securities Investment Fund Management Joint Stock Company (FUEABVND) were approved for listing and officially traded on the HOSE.

As of August 31, 2024, 40 businesses on the HOSE had a market capitalization of over USD 1 billion, including two enterprises with a capitalization of more than USD 10 billion: Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (VCB) and Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development (BID).
