The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved a proposal from the Department of Transport to enhance road-rail connectivity and improve access to Saigon Station.
According to the Department of Transport, currently, only bus route 7 directly serves Saigon Station. Additionally, there are nearby bus routes on Cach Mang Thang 8 Street, including routes 13, 30, and 65. Apart from buses, passengers mostly rely on taxis and private vehicles to reach the station.
Traffic congestion during peak hours on Cach Mang Thang 8 Street affects the punctuality of bus route 7 and nearby bus services. Moreover, the narrow width of connecting roads such as Nguyen Thong and Nguyen Phuc Nguyen limits the use of large-capacity buses.
To improve passenger access to Saigon Station, the Department of Transport proposes the use of smaller buses, taxis, and four-wheeled vehicles with engines.
Specifically, this November, a new small bus route will be introduced to connect passengers from Saigon Station to Ben Thanh Station on metro line 1.
In parallel, the city is piloting four-wheeled electric vehicles operated by Public Transport Co., Ltd., with plans to utilize these vehicles to connect with Saigon Station once the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety takes effect, expanding the pilot’s scope.
In addition to these two forms of transportation, the Department of Transport has instructed the Public Transport Management Center to gather opinions from districts and Thu Duc City on the proposed locations for electric vehicle stations, intending to provide a public bicycle service for passengers traveling to Saigon Station.
Saigon Station has one entrance and one exit connecting to Nguyen Phuc Nguyen Street. The traffic situation at intersections such as Tran Van Dang – Nguyen Thong, Tran Van Dang – Tran Quang Dieu, and Nguyen Thong – Rach Bung Binh – Nguyen Phuc Nguyen remains stable.
However, at the Cong Truong Dan Chu roundabout and the Cach Mang Thang 8 – Rach Bung Binh intersection, local traffic congestion occurs during evening peak hours due to high vehicle density, making it challenging for passengers to access Saigon Station.
