Vietnamese state-owned oil and gas company, Petrovietnam, has recently uncovered a scam involving fake Facebook pages bearing the company’s logo and banner. These pages have been advertising attractive job opportunities with high salaries and excellent career prospects, luring many interested individuals.
In response to the recent job postings on social media, a representative from Petrovietnam’s Communication and Corporate Culture Department confirmed that the company does not post job advertisements on any social media platforms. All official information from the company is communicated through their website: pvn.vn.
One way to identify these fraudulent schemes is to look at the creation date of the Facebook pages, which are often recently created. The content and images posted are usually copied from news sources, and the job descriptions are vague and may contain grammatical errors.
These fake pages often provide strange links that direct users to a fake website that closely resembles the official Petrovietnam site. These websites are created using Google Sites, a popular Google application for creating websites, and their sole purpose is to collect job application information from unsuspecting applicants.
Petrovietnam representatives also revealed that after applicants submit their resumes, the scammers send an email congratulating them on passing the initial review and then instruct them to join an internal training course. Applicants are asked to download a messaging application called “Signal,” supposedly an internal app of Petrovietnam. However, “Signal” is actually a private messaging app with high security features and is not widely known. Applicants are then guided to join private chat groups created on this application, where they are introduced to lucrative investment opportunities, ultimately leading to a scam.
This is not the first time that oil and gas companies in Vietnam have been impersonated on social media for fraudulent purposes. Several other reputable companies in the industry, such as PVEP, PV GAS, PVOIL, PVFCCo, and PVTrans, have also had their brands and logos misused in similar scams.
These companies have issued warnings to the public, stating that they are not associated with any social media pages using their names, brands, or logos. They emphasize that when they have job openings, they will only post official announcements on their designated recruitment channels or websites and will never conduct online tests or charge fees from applicants.
With the increasing sophistication of online scams, authorities have advised the public to be vigilant and not fall for promises of high returns on financial investments. People are urged not to join private chat groups or invest in websites or applications without proper verification of the entities behind them. If anyone suspects fraudulent activities or encounters such scams, they should immediately report it to the nearest police station for assistance and timely action.
