Heavy rainfall in the past few days, combined with upstream water, has caused severe flooding in Nho Quan district, Ninh Binh province, affecting thousands of households.
As of September 12, approximately 2,556 households in the district were flooded. Specifically, Lac Van commune reported around 300 flooded households, Duc Long had about 953, Lang Phong 172, Gia Thuy 647, Gia Lam 130, Xich Tho 67, and Thuong Hoa 230 households. The floodwaters reached depths of 0.3 to 2 meters.
The rising floodwaters impacted approximately 528 hectares of rice fields, over 446 hectares of aquaculture, more than 158 hectares of crops, about 1,000 hectares of annual and fruit crops, and 11 hectares of production forests.
In response to the flooding, local authorities implemented response plans based on the “four on-site” principle to ensure the safety of residents. This included stabilizing residents in higher locations, accommodating them with relatives, or hosting them in unaffected households.
Additionally, medical teams were organized to provide healthcare services and essential supplies to evacuated and affected residents. Task forces were also established to visit affected areas and guide people in flood prevention and response measures.
The local government promptly implemented measures to drain water from flooded areas. In Nho Quan district, 11 pumping stations are currently operating, and the Thac La reservoir has opened all 13 gates. The Dong Chuong reservoir has also opened both gates, and the Yen Quang reservoir is installing iron pipes to discharge water near the spillway.
The flood levels in the Hoang Long River at Ben De, Gian Khau, and the Day River at Ninh Binh are rising slowly. According to the Ninh Binh Hydro-Meteorological Station, as of 7 pm on September 12, the water level in the Hoang Long River at Ben De was 4.93 meters (0.93 meters above the third alert level), 4.5 meters at Gian Khau (0.8 meters above the third alert level), and 4.2 meters in the Day River at Ninh Binh (0.7 meters above the third alert level). This level is 0.26 meters higher than the historical peak in 2017.
To proactively respond to the flood situation, the local government continues to focus on intensifying information dissemination and guidance to raise public awareness about disaster prevention and response. They are also conducting thorough inspections of critical and emergency areas to facilitate timely direction and reporting. Additionally, they are maintaining 24-hour duty teams and strictly implementing approved disaster prevention, response, search, and rescue plans.
