Highway 13 is a vital transportation artery connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong Province. This 140.5-kilometer-long route traverses three provinces/cities, including Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and Binh Phuoc. Ho Chi Minh City accounts for a 10-kilometer stretch, while Binh Duong covers 68.5 kilometers.
Despite being the same highway, there are significant width variations between the sections passing through different provinces/cities. The Binh Duong section of National Highway 13 (Binh Duong Boulevard) was upgraded and expanded in 2023 to include eight lanes (four lanes each way), each measuring 3.5 meters wide, accommodating various vehicles, from cars to heavy trucks, safely.
Additionally, the road features sidewalks and greenery on both sides. The traffic flow on this stretch is efficiently managed through well-designed overpasses and underpasses.
Highway 13 is considered the “backbone” of Binh Duong’s transportation network, connecting several large industrial parks, such as VSIP and My Phuoc. Consequently, this stretch experiences heavy traffic, including motorcycles, trucks, and heavy containers. However, the presence of six to eight lanes ensures smooth traffic flow and reduces congestion.
In contrast, the Ho Chi Minh City section of Highway 13 is narrower, ranging from 18 to 24 meters wide, with only four to six lanes, creating a bottleneck effect. This is particularly notable given the highway’s status as a vital transportation link, resulting in high traffic volume.
Many sections of the road are currently in disrepair, with uneven and patched surfaces. Some parts lack proper traffic signs and drainage systems, leading to potential flooding and accidents. Furthermore, there is a lack of dedicated lanes for motorcycles and pedestrians.
Hence, the upgrade and expansion of Highway 13 are essential. Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Transportation is expediting the preparation of a pre-feasibility study report for the project to upgrade and expand National Highway 13 (from Binh Trieu Bridge to the border with Binh Duong Province, a length of 6 kilometers). The project is expected to commence construction on April 30, 2025.
The road will be widened to 53-60 meters with eight lanes. The total investment is estimated at VND 14,000 billion, including VND 9,400 billion for land clearance. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
