Honda is expanding its mini-bike family in the US with the addition of the Honda Dax 125 2025, an adorable retro model that captures the essence of the brand’s iconic past. This new offering is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Honda Trail 70, which took America by storm in 1969 and became a household name.
While the Dax nameplate made a comeback in 2022, it wasn’t initially available in the US. However, Honda is now addressing that oversight by introducing the Dax 125, a nod to the brand’s vintage motorcycle enthusiasts. This new model boasts a unique semi-automatic four-speed transmission with a centrifugal clutch, eliminating the need for a clutch lever. Powered by the same air-cooled 125cc single-cylinder engine found in the Grom and Trail 125, this bike offers impressive fuel efficiency, delivering nearly 107 miles per gallon.

With a low seat height of 30.6 inches and a lightweight design tipping the scales at just 236 pounds, the Dax is an incredibly approachable and maneuverable bike, perfect for zipping around town. It rides on 12-inch wheels borrowed from the Grom and is equipped with front and rear disc brakes, along with standard ABS for added safety. The Dax’s classic Honda aesthetics and T-Bone frame evoke a sense of nostalgia, with the upcoming 2025 US model paying homage to the original Trail 50 and 70, known as the CT70 overseas and the ST70 in Japan.

The story behind the Dax is just as intriguing as its design. According to Honda, a dealer in Boise, Idaho, named Herb Uhl, began modifying Super Cubs in the 1960s to improve their off-road capabilities and performance. His innovations gained so much popularity that American Honda sent one of his modified bikes to the company’s headquarters in Japan, leading to the birth of the Trail 50 and the CT line. By 1969, the Trail 50 evolved into the CT70 or Trail 70, featuring a new T-shaped frame that resembled a dachshund dog, earning it the nickname “Dax.”
The Dax 125 will be available in October 2024, starting at $4,499. With this latest addition, Honda is clearly revitalizing its mini-bike lineup, giving these beloved models a new lease of life after decades of absence.
