With a total population of about 1.2 billion people, the community accounts for 16% of global GDP and 20% of world trade.
Vietnam and France established diplomatic relations on April 12, 1973, and upgraded them to a Strategic Partnership in 2013. This is the first visit by a Vietnamese President to France in 22 years. France is Vietnam’s fifth-largest European trading partner, with a trade turnover of US$4.8 billion in 2023. In the first eight months of this year, trade reached over US$3.4 billion, up 6.9% from the same period last year.
