Science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation are powerful tools that facilitate Vietnam’s green transition, promoting a low-carbon, circular, and sustainable economy. This is a pivotal driver for a breakthrough in the country’s economic growth model.

According to experts, green, digital, and inclusive transformation are essential to enhancing the efficient management, exploitation, and utilization of green resources for sustainable development. This aligns with Vietnam’s net-zero emission commitment by 2050, pledged at COP26.

At the 2nd annual Vietnam New Economy Forum 2024, themed “Creating a New Economy: Revolution in Digital and Green Transformation and the Pioneer Role of Enterprises,” held on October 16, 2024, leading enterprises in sectors such as textiles, agriculture, agricultural product processing, and logistics shared their fascinating journeys of dual transformation.

THE URGENT NEED FOR DUAL TRANSFORMATION

Logistics, a crucial service sector within the supply chain, plays a decisive role in determining national, industrial, and enterprise competitiveness. Optimizing logistics is particularly essential for enhancing the competitiveness and value of agricultural produce.

Sharing orientations and approaches to digital and green transformation within enterprises, Mr. Le Tuan Anh, Deputy General Director of Viettel Post, revealed that over the years, Viettel Post has proactively embraced a technology-focused orientation. To date, the enterprise has developed ten technology products covering the entire supply chain, from warehouse operations, transportation, last-mile delivery to cross-border logistics.

“We have mastered robot technology and operational exploitation in warehouses, including goods sorting operations. By owning these foundational technologies, we will have the opportunity to break through and compete with global logistics players,” shared the Deputy General Director of Viettel Post.

“Logistics is no longer just a service but is likened to the lifeblood of the economy. With the rapid growth of e-commerce (30-40% per year) and the development of the economy and interconnected supply chains, logistics enterprises cannot afford to lag in applying digital and green infrastructure. Alongside digital transformation, enterprises must embrace green transformation.”

In tandem with digital transformation, enterprises need to undergo green transformation. Viettel Post has oriented itself towards building smartlock cabinets in apartment buildings, industrial parks, and densely populated areas to reduce travel for postal workers, thereby contributing to carbon emission reduction.

Additionally, the enterprise has developed automation systems that can operate in lightless environments and automatic electrical systems to reduce electricity consumption. Moreover, instead of using single-use packaging, the company has adopted reusable materials that can be used up to 200 times, reducing waste.

Looking ahead, Viettel Post will gradually transition to electric vehicles, replacing fuel-based ones.

As a pioneer in digital transformation in the agricultural and agricultural product processing sector, Mr. Ngo Minh Hai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TH Group, shared that, in reality, digital technology and the circular economy–green economy model have been implemented in the Group since its inception. These two processes are closely linked and considered the key to building the enterprise’s brand. This is seen as the recipe for success.

From the outset, digital and advanced technology have contributed to the effective and robust implementation of the circular and sustainable development model in the TH Group. The Group’s green and circular economy model was put into practice from the beginning with specific actions.

In the textile industry, Mr. Dang Vu Hung, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of PPJ Group, shared, “Currently, enterprises are facing the challenging dual transformation equation, and we consider it an urgent issue of our time. The era of sustainable development compels enterprises to adapt, especially those in the textile industry.” Of course, both advantages and disadvantages coexist on this journey.

Regarding digital transformation, PPJ Group has a relatively complete digital ecosystem and is one of the few Vietnamese textile enterprises to have built, perfected, and operated a comprehensive digital governance system, successfully applying world-leading information technology and green technology to textile production and business operations.

In terms of green transformation, PPJ Group has attained nearly 30 certifications according to global standards on social responsibility, environment, and raw materials, along with dozens of certifications based on international brands’ specific requirements.

CHALLENGES FOR ENTERPRISES ACROSS ALL INDUSTRIES

Highlighting the advantages of the dual transformation journey, PPJ Group’s leadership emphasized the benefit of being “proactive.” “We proactively embarked on digital transformation before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains, forcing businesses to turn to digital solutions. We also proactively initiated green transformation from the outset. As we aim for the global market, green standards are a prerequisite for us to meet international norms and satisfy our customers’ compliance requirements.”

Additionally, the Group owns a complete supply chain, from product design and development, fiber, fabric, garment manufacturing to international transportation and customer warehouses. Except for cotton production, where we must source “clean” cotton with BCI, organic, or recycled standards, all other links in the supply chain are under the Group’s control regarding “green and digital” content, Mr. Hung informed.

Green and digital transformation, when undertaken together, will impact and motivate each other. Digital technology can make production greener, and businesses’ growth will lead to superior sustainability.

However, for enterprises across all industries, dual transformation will present challenges. These challenges may be amplified for small and medium-sized enterprises with limited resources. Addressing this issue, Mr. Hung emphasized, “The world is revolving around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, considering them the new yardstick for comprehensively assessing enterprises’ sustainable production and business practices.”
