On October 26, Chinese automaker BYD launched its new electric pickup truck, the BYD Shark, in Cambodia. The starting price of this vehicle is expected to be around $56,700 (approximately 1.43 billion VND).

Notably, instead of larger regional markets such as Thailand or Indonesia, Cambodia is the first Southeast Asian and Asian market where the BYD Shark is being sold. This hybrid pickup truck was first introduced in Mexico back in May and hasn’t even been released in China yet. It is currently available in Brazil, Mexico, and Panama and is set to launch in Australia soon.

BYD unveiled the Shark 6 in partnership with Harmony Auto, the exclusive distributor of BYD vehicles in Cambodia. Interestingly, Harmony Auto is not the partner providing BYD vehicles in Vietnam.

During the event, BYD highlighted the VTOL (Vehicle to Load) capability of the Shark, which allows the vehicle to power external devices. This function can provide electricity for camping equipment, emergency power sources, and household appliances.

The Shark utilizes BYD’s DMO platform, which is also used for their off-road vehicles like the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 and Bao 8. The DMO platform prioritizes energy efficiency and enables true off-road capability with torque distribution adjustment between the front and rear wheels.

The Shark’s dimensions are 5,457 x 1,971 x 1,925 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. It supports a payload of up to 835 kg and has a cargo volume of 1,450 liters. The Shark can tow up to 2,500 kg.

Under the hood, it’s equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine producing 192 horsepower, coupled with two electric motors (one on each axle). The front motor delivers 228 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque, while the rear motor generates 201 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque.

The total system output of this hybrid setup is over 430 horsepower, with torque reaching 650 Nm. The BYD Shark can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 160 km/h. Its fuel consumption is advertised at 7.5 liters per 100 km.

The vehicle is fitted with a lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery pack, offering a capacity of 29.58 kWh. This setup enables a pure electric range of 100 km and a combined range of 840 km when both the battery and fuel tank are full. The truck can charge from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes using a DC fast-charging system.

BYD’s first pickup truck is gaining significant traction in major markets. In Australia, the BYD Shark received 1,400 pre-orders within just 12 hours of going on sale.

With BYD actively entering the Vietnamese market with new electric vehicles, the BYD Shark could become the first electric pickup truck available in Vietnam, competing against established rivals such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
