The UNESCO Office in Hanoi, the School of Inter-disciplinary Sciences and Arts, and the Ninh Binh Tourism Department recently organized a conference to announce a research project on the Economic Valuation of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.
Mr. Jonathan Baker, Head of the UNESCO Office in Hanoi, emphasized that accurately identifying and assessing the economic and brand value of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex as a World Heritage Site provides not only scientific and practical foundations for sustainable management, conservation, and promotion of the heritage site but also helps inform economic and social development strategies. It aids in addressing community livelihood issues and ensures a balance between conservation and development.
Providing an overview of the Trang An Heritage Site a decade after it received the title of World Heritage Site, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Thuc, Head of the Research Project on “Economic Valuation of Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex,” elaborated on the project’s four research branches: Natural Heritage, Cultural Heritage, Settlement Heritage, and Tourism Economics, along with the outstanding complex values of humanity and Southeast Asia.
The project aimed to assess the brand and economic value of representative sites and structures within the heritage site that are being conserved and utilized for tourism activities.
It also involved a comprehensive valuation of the brand and economic value of the mixed World Heritage Site of Trang An, taking into account the context of policies, strategies, planning, and community engagement, as well as heritage management and specialized research.
By quantifying the value and providing additional data, the project lays the foundation for a policy direction that leverages the Trang An – Hoa Lu heritage as a driver for tourism, heritage, and creative economy development. It also emphasizes heritage conservation as a source for the development of a Millennium Heritage City in the context of rapid urbanization in Vietnam.
The project aims to promote the brand of the mixed World Heritage Site of Trang An globally, within Southeast Asia, and across nations in the context of globalization. It seeks to integrate Trang An into networks of global heritage cities, creative cities, and learning cities under the UNESCO umbrella.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Thuc also clarified that the project would scientifically answer questions regarding the economic value of the heritage, the economic opportunities presented by the heritage, and the value in conserving, exploiting, and promoting the heritage site.
The project’s valuation results will be disseminated internationally through scientific publications and communicated through international media, highlighting the present and future opportunity values of this significant complex World Heritage Site.
Additionally, the “Economic Valuation of Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex” project aligns with the Ninh Binh Province Planning approved by the Prime Minister in March 2024. It contributes to the development of Hoa Lu City, rooted in the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex heritage, with the characteristics of a Millennium Heritage City and a creative city, envisioned to become a centrally governed city by 2035.
The project also aims to quantify the value of the heritage to build policies for a sustainable development model, with a new focus on the heritage, tourism, and creative economy.
At the conference, Mr. Bui Van Manh, Director of Ninh Binh Tourism Department, emphasized that the project would serve as a foundation for developing policies and strategies to effectively, sustainably, and harmoniously exploit the potential and strengths of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex while preserving its unique historical, cultural, and natural values as a World Heritage Site.

“The Fertilizer Industry’s Plea: Remove the 5% VAT or Risk Our Decline and Halt Production.”
The latest amendments to the Value-Added Tax Law fail to address the long-standing issue faced by the domestic fertilizer industry. As a result, this vital sector continues to be discriminated against, excluded from the scope of value-added tax applicability. This exclusion puts the industry at risk of reverting to the decline and stagnation witnessed during 2015-2020, threatening its very survival.
