In preparation for the high-speed rail project, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hoa Phat Group, Tran Dinh Long, and a team of technology experts visited several top steel rail manufacturers in Europe in October-November 2024.
According to Long, the quality of steel used in bearing balls, valve springs, alloy springs, and tire cord steel for automobiles is rated 10, while the difficulty of producing steel for high-speed train rails is only rated 8.
“Hoa Phat Group’s team of technology engineers has mastered the technology to produce the most challenging and highest-quality products, such as cold-rolled steel wire, arc-welded steel wire, steel for elevator cables, weather-resistant steel plates since 2021, and especially steel coils for tire cord steel,” affirmed billionaire Tran Dinh Long.
Tire cord steel requires an extremely high level of steel purity. The steel cord has a very small diameter of 0.15-1.80mm, like a hair strand, and the product needs to have special mechanical and physical properties, ultra-high purity, and low gas impurity levels. Hoa Phat Dung Quat has been producing this special type of steel since 2022 at the Rolling Mill 3 of Dung Quat 1 and supplying it to Hyosung (South Korea) and Bekeart (Belgium). Additionally, Hoa Phat has also been certified to supply steel materials for elevator cable and crane cable production to Tokyo Rope, Japan.
As the only Vietnamese steel manufacturer capable of producing high-tech steel, the Chairman of Hoa Phat assures that the company is committed to investing in equipment and technology transfer to produce the best and highest-quality steel rails, on par with those produced in Europe.
It is worth noting that Hoa Phat’s G7 technology partners, such as Danieli and SMS, are also leading providers of steel rail production technology in Europe and Asia.
Hoa Phat Group is also in the initial stages of negotiation, collaboration, technology, and technical support with partners and equipment suppliers for steel rail production for railways. These partners have accompanied Hoa Phat for many years.
Hoa Phat Dung Quat also collaborates with the Faculty of Materials of Hanoi University of Technology to organize in-depth training courses on high-quality steel products, focusing on specific types of steel and complex production techniques, such as steel for tire cords, electrical steel (silicon steel), and steel for high-speed train rails.
In addition to the aforementioned preparations, Hoa Phat is also expediting the completion of necessary procedures for land clearance and the implementation of projects in the Hoa Tam Industrial Park, located in the Nam Phu Yen Economic Zone, Phu Yen Province. One of the projects includes investing in the construction of the Hoa Phat Gang Thép Integrated Production Complex.
The expected product structure of this complex focuses on high-quality steel lines serving mechanical manufacturing, such as rail steel, steel plates, structural steel, shaped steel, and smooth round steel bars (SBQ). As soon as the land is available, Hoa Phat will be ready to implement the high-speed rail steel production project, with technology, human resources, and production facilities in place.
